SRM has decided to break the restraints of 2D block stacking games and has reinvented the classic Tetris with their game, Pit Blocks 3D. Using a flat plane of various sizes, you are now able to stack blocks in 3D, adding to the difficulty and risk.
While you wouldn’t think 3D block stacking would be super different from Tetris, it actually is. It took me a little bit to get used to. You have to fill a larger area which means you are more likely to make errors that will lead to you not being able to clear layers. You also have a lot more ways to move the blocks which can be hard to do as they are falling. Especially since the speed at which they fall increases as you level up. You can use a controller for this game but I suggest maneuvering the camera with a mouse and using your keyboard for controls. It is a lot easier in my opinion.
What I find really interesting is that SRM has created five different backgrounds to play with and each one has a different story. As you gain achievements and make your way through the levels you uncover more of the story. I love puzzle games because they are relaxing and mind-numbing. I often listen to audio books while I play them so it is really cool to be able to have a story in mind while playing this game. The different backgrounds are all pretty interesting and have an RPG feel to them. Some of the backgrounds even have enemies and bosses, which brings in the storytelling aspect of this game even more. The music in this game is really awesome too because they have a wide genre. From Heavy Metal to piano, you will be able to enjoy mood setting music for each background.
The one thing about this game that I am not super happy about is that it isn’t very awarding. Since there is such a bigger space to fill it takes a lot longer to clear layers of blocks so you don’t get as instant a gratification as you do with the classic 2D format. It also isn’t super unclear how you level up. I think it may be point based. Maybe if it was like the Bejeweled games where they had that disembodied voice say things like “Good” or “Excellent” it would be more rewarding. It may just be me but at the moment, I feel like it just seems to drag on even though you are technically advancing through the game.
I think this is a really cool concept. I love puzzle games and I think it’s awesome that SRM thought to take Tetris to the next level. I also think its a cool that they added the storytelling aspect. I hope that sometime in the future they will add something that will make it seem more rewarding and less tedious. I am looking forward to playing more of Pit Blocks 3D.
