Melbits World is created by Barcelonian developer and publisher Melbot Studios. It was the winner of the 2017 edition of the PlayStation contest in Spain. This game is the first to be released from Melbot Studios and has already found high remarks in the Indie game community.
At first glance, I have to admit Melbits World looks absolutely adorable. I love a cute character design to get me into a game. So what exactly is a Melbit? Well a Melbit is a little creature that lives in the Playstation 4 according to Melbot Studios. They were created to show the good vibes of the internet. They are happy buddies to make your day and it’s your job to make sure they get from one end of the puzzle to the next. Every time your Melbit makes it the end of the puzzle, you are rewarded with a new level and sometimes a new item for your little friends. Who doesn’t love an adorable monster that you can customize with fun accessories?
One of the most unique aspects of this game is that you use your phone as the controller. All you do is download the app and connect when the game prompts you to. It’s so easy, children can do it; with permission from their parents, of course. Swiping up and down on the screen and turning the phone up and down moves the obstacles in the game so your Melbit can make safe passage to the end. There was definitely a learning curve for me with the controls as I didn’t understand the timing at first.
Let’s talk about the puzzles. Depending on the level, the harder it is to get all your Melbits to the end. You are in control of the obstacles- meaning it’s your job to control the jump pads, walls, and platforms. The Melbits enter the level and move on their own. They are summoned with a few seconds intervals in between each other. If you wait too long, all four will be at the part of the level at the same time causing disarray. Sometimes this accidentally catapults one Melbit up and another across the map and into the abyss. It takes quick thinking, teamwork, and timing to beat a puzzle, so be prepared.
UPDATE: The developers have now added a level selector.
I only have a few qualms with Melbits World. First off, there is no way to save where you are progress-wise within each world level. You must start over from the beginning of each world every time you play. This is annoying as I know casual gamers like to set down and pick back up games with the little time they have. Second is the controls are a bit wonky to use at first for seasoned gamers. This is easily rectifiable with user acclimation. Lastly is that you can’t just play with one player; it requires two or more. That can be fixed with many different solutions like updates or download content.
This game is great for a variety of people, but most of all children and gamers who enjoy a good collaboration. If you’re used to a controller, it may be a bit hard to get into at first, but it’s easy to learn controls and quick adaptability can make anyone a Melbit Master in no time. If you’re not into casual gaming, you may be at a loss.
