New world, new order
Nothing could ever prepare you for something so devastating. Watching the entire world being rewritten before you. What rules governed the world before no longer apply. Life’s routines are flipped on their head; people do what they can to survive. Grasping onto whatever semblance of the life that existed before everything changed, Atom RPG, created by AtomTeam, runs into the wilderness of post-apocalyptic Soviet Union. It is there that you battle, barter, and buy your way through the world while you try to complete your assigned mission.
Autobots, role out
The thing that immediately stuck out to me about Atom RPG was its hardline commitment to role playing and all the facets that come with it. The depth and breadth of customization of your own player character was more than I anticipated. High variability in stat customization, a plethora of physical appearances, and strengths and weaknesses that the player decides. The game immediately leaps into determining who this person that will be traversing through alternate Soviet Russia exactly is and how they will behave. Playing Atom RPG is reminiscent of classical tabletop role playing games, with high degrees of customization and repercussions for the choices that the player makes.
Never bring a fist to a gunfight
One of the mainstays of RPG’s is the combat system. So much of the game’s success depends on the operation, strategies, and mechanics of the battles within. While not completely perfect, the combat in Atom RPG sports a turn-based tile strategy for fights. It really scratches an itch for nuance, critical thinking, and risk versus reward analysis. Although it is not without its problems, figuring out the actual actions and mechanics of how things works and managing weapons in and out of your inventory can prove difficult at first. However, after spending some time getting a grip on the flow of the combat makes it enjoyable.
Comrade Characterization
Some of the most charming parts of this game come from its characters. For just the protagonist themselves, there are easily 20 plus options for physical appearances and their personality is up to the player. The NPC’s in Atom RPG all boast distinct physical appearances, personalities, and back stories. These people have motivations for their actions, and have a certain sense of life within them. That is in no small way thanks to the superb voice acting work in the game. The setting itself is quite unique for an RPG, which in turn, allows for a different assortment of characters and personalities to shine through rather than in a traditional fantasy setting.
