Zombieland: Double Tapper Review for iOS

Zombieland: Double Tapper is a new Idle RPG developed by Sony Pictures Television Games, Tilting Point, and Metagame Studios. It incorporates the Zombieland universe right into your mobile phone! So if you love the Zombieland franchise make sure to look out for it!

The objective of the game is to clear all the stages and advance in the storyline. For each stage, there are multiple waves of zombies. At the beginning of the stage, you get a chance to choose which hero(es), characters from Zombieland, you want to deploy to kill the zombies. The levels and skillsets for each character are reset after each stage, which was a new experience for me, because I mostly play games where the levels and stats of each character build up as you progress in the game. But back to Zombieland: Double Tapper, I think it’s a good way to allow players to mix up hero and skill combinations and strategize how to best beat each stage.

Weapons that each character can carry, on the other hand, are able to be leveled up and they stay that way even if you go on to the next stage. Evolution of heroes to make them more powerful, which can be done by gathering enough shards and upgrade items, also don’t reset as you enter a new stage.

In the game, you, the player, can tap on the zombies to kill them quicker instead of just relying on your heroes to kill all the zombies for you. If you don’t kill all the zombies, the stage resets and you have to restart the stage until your heroes can kill all the zombies. As you kill more zombies, you get more money which can be used to level up the heroes and upgrade their skills. You can also shoot the birds that carry coin chests (only available when you’re actually playing/when the game is loaded up on your phone) and they’ll give you so much money.

As the nature of the game is an Idle RPG, you can leave Zombieland: Double Tapper and your characters will continue going through the stage and advancing for you. For example, you’ll still get coins and you can even clear all the stages so that the next time you log in, you can go directly to the next stage. I really liked coming back to the game and seeing that I’ve either cleared all the stages or earned a bunch load of money! Sometimes I don’t have enough time to sit down and tap to shoot all the zombies so although tapping on the zombies can kill them faster, you don’t necessarily have to tap because the heroes will automatically shoot/hit the zombies, which I liked.

Zombieland: Double Tapper also features daily, weekly, and other special quests. It has special offers as well where you can get items/boosts for free after watching videos, which I thought was nice because I don’t have to pay with actual money for a boost.

As for my rating, I would give Zombieland: Double Tapper a 7/10. There are some aspects of the game that I feel like they missed and could have developed more to make the game better. For example, I didn’t like the summoning of heroes/items part of the game because it wasn’t very interesting. I’ve played similar games and usually when you can summon heroes/items, there’s a whole bunch of effects like the opening of the box accompanied with a bunch of light and then the hero/item appears. In those games, it made me want to summon more things because it was so epic. This game, however, didn’t have any of that which made me disappointed. I feel like they could have done more — made it more appealing and fun to summon more heroes and items such as the heroes jumping into the middle of the screen and swinging their melee weapon or shooting their ranged weapons.

I'm a sophomore studying Computer Science at the University of Michigan. I'm really interested in how technology can impact lives through game development. One of the things that I really like about gaming is that, not only is it fun and relaxing, but there are so many ideas you can incorporate into games and their storylines such as meaningful lessons/messages.
