VECTRONOM Review for iOS

VECTRONOM Impressions for iOS

Vectronom is a 3D platformer, rhythm-based game made by Ludopium and published by ARTE. If you’re into rhythm-based games like 140 then you’ll most likely have fun with this game. It just recently got released on the App Store and Google Play so you can enjoy the experience right on your mobile phone!

In the game, you play as a cube. This is because, and I quote from the actual developers, “don’t be a square.” You can either swipe to move the cube or tap to move the cube in the same direction. From what I could tell, there’s a lot of pattern memorization in Vectronom. The objective of the game is to reach the end of the stage, moving in sync with the music, without exploding or falling off the platform. Vectronom is advertised to have about 100 puzzle stages to go through with around 33 original electronic soundtracks.

I had a fun experience playing the game. I think what got me the most was just how cute the cube is. It jiggles/bounces as you move, which is so adorable, and I think it even moves to the beat of the music (when you’re not moving the cube and it’s just standing there) which makes it even cuter! I really like the soundtrack of the game. Because it’s a rhythm game, the music is meant to fit in with the environment but I thought the incorporation of it was really neat. It was really cool to see how smoothly the ground/platform moved to the beat of the music.

After opening/going into the game, you can select which level you want to play. Vectronom automatically saves your progress for you but if you want to retry a stage to grab all the pickups or get a better beat precision then level select is the thing for you! If you don’t want to pick a specific stage then you can just click the continue button and you’ll be directed to the very beginning of the stage you left off on so be careful! If you reach the third “checkpoint”/get further than the beginning and you exit out of the game, it’ll restart you at the beginning of the stage!

I really liked the fact that the developers took into account that the flashing colors throughout the gameplay can be overwhelming for some people so they included a static background in their options. For those that need color aid, there’s an option for that too!

As for my rating, I would give Vectronom an 8.5/10. I really like how they took into account the difficulties that players may have while playing the game (static background and color aid). Everything is so cute and well-done. But, and this might be just for me, I thought the game was a bit too challenging at points. I know it’s meant to be challenging but it got a bit frustrating. I think maybe if after a certain amount of tries and not being able to complete the stage, including a hint/help guide to direct the player to the finish could be helpful. I was also a bit iffy on the controls. I wish there was a trackpad on the screen that could move the cube up, down, left, and right because swiping wasn’t doing it for me.

I'm a sophomore studying Computer Science at the University of Michigan. I'm really interested in how technology can impact lives through game development. One of the things that I really like about gaming is that, not only is it fun and relaxing, but there are so many ideas you can incorporate into games and their storylines such as meaningful lessons/messages.
