Zumba Burn It Up! for the Nintendo Switch is a fun work out game geared towards adults who want to be fit. This colorful game was developed by 505 Games and was released this year. You can dance to over 30 songs which include top-hits and Zumba originals.
Zumba Burn It Up! is kind of nostalgic for me. It reminded me so much of playing Wii Sports and Just Dance by Ubisoft on the Wii when I was a kid. (Just Dance 2020 was just released as well for the Switch.) However, Zumba Burn It Up! is definitely more geared towards adults than Just Dance. Just Dance is a lot less intense and more child-like or whimsical really. Zumba Burn It Up! is very much more focused on adults who want a good work out. So in a way, it felt like an upgrade for me. I grew up and so did my work out game on Nintendo!
Much like in Just Dance, you hold the Joy-Con while following the moves and it tracks how well you are doing. When you hit moves perfectly you get extra points which tally up at the end of the song or class. With that being said you have a couple of options for how to play this game. You can play individual songs or you can do classes. There are three lengths of classes: 15 minutes, 30 minutes, and 60 minutes. I definitely suggest starting with a couple of individual songs if you are a beginner. The first time I played I only played for 9 minutes and I was exhausted. There are also intensities for the classes and the songs. Each song is either low, medium, or high intensity. Honestly, you will work up a sweat with any of these intensities.
I am not the fittest person so I asked my mom who is very into fitness to play this game with me. This is awesome because you can have up to four players and there is a Fitness Party mode, which means you and your teammate work together to earn stars. I will say if you are going to play with more than yourself you will need a lot of room to dance. Both my mom and I were sweaty and tired by the end of the last song. So even if you are already used to working out, this game can be beneficial to you and maybe even a fun way to spice up your workout routine.
After our class, my mom and I both agreed that there are some things that could be different about Zumba Burn It Up! For one thing, the awesome thing about Zumba is that you have an instructor to guide you in the moves. Zumba Burn It Up! has instructors but they don’t say anything so you have to just hope that you are a visual learner and you can copy them based on just watching what they do. Another thing that makes Zumba Burn It Up! similar to Just Dance is that it has a little window to show you upcoming moves. This is great but it is in the top right corner of the screen and is very hard to look at and follow the instructor at the same time. You are able to change the frequency of these cues but I honestly don’t think they are frequent enough, especially for beginners. The dance moves are so fast that it is hard to learn what you are doing in the moment. There is definitely a learning curve for sure.
I feel that even though there are some things that could be different about Zumba Burn It Up! it is honestly a great resource. I have a lot of anxiety when it comes to working out and I know a lot of other people do to so it is really cool to have a Zumba class in your house. This game is also super colorful and fun. The songs are great and once you get a hang of the moves it is pretty easy to follow along.
