There is something to be said about winding down and reading a good book. Sometimes however, you want to relax and still have a bit of adventure and the ability to use your head to make intuitive choices. A favorite type of book for many are the choose-your-own adventure books that were huge with both kids and adults back in the day. Ranging from Goosebumps to Indiana Jones, there were adventure books out there for every genre and every type of reader. Similarly, text-based video game adventures were huge back in the early 1980s and 1990s, especially on systems such as the Commodore 64 (Dracula, for example). Sometimes you want to play a video game all the while having the similar relaxing style of a choose-your-own adventure novel.

This is where cyberpunkdreams, by developer/publisher Late Night Studios, comes into play. With a classic dystopian setting evoking Escape from New York, Mad Max, Fallout, Cyberpunk itself, and many favorites in the genre; the game is simple yet has plenty to offer, with various options for customizing your character, from the type of mission or overall goal you have been sent to the border towns and dystopian future Cincinnati for, to how you act, your clothes, your weapon choice, augmentations, if you are a mutant, and a variety of other personal choices that are rifle to be upgraded and augmented. This is basically the text video game version of Deus ExCyberpunk, and Fallout crammed into a blender together.

In my time with cyberpunkdreams, I experienced city checkpoints with rent-a-cops, terrorist mayhem involving my character rescuing a character amidst gunfire, watching two psychos duke it out in a back alley, and perform backbreaking labor in order to pay said rent-a-cops to get into a city. This barely represents 1% of what is available to play with here. There are loads more to experience, actions to perform, and enhancements and upgrades to achieve, and multiple playthroughs are encouraged. For example, some choices, such as having a mutation, make the early game hard, but allow a wider variety of actions to take in the late game.

If cyberpunkdreams truly was a paperback choose-your-own adventure novel, it would at least reach the length of The Lord of the Rings with all of the abilities, choices, customization options, and quests available at your disposal. If you are looking for an in-depth RPG that you can sit back and unwind with, yet have a near limitless number of options to take, definitely take a trip to this neo-dystopic wasteland, you punk!

Your local neighborhood nutjob, gamer, and teacher! I'm an avid fan of many genres such as platformers, shooters, horror, etc. I am also an avid tabletop gamer - hugely into the worlds of Warhammer and all of their spinoffs. I'm a big believer in being objective - even if something is not my cup of tea, I want to talk about it on the objective level - is it well made, crafted with love, and with care for the fans? If so, that's a good game in my book for someone and well worth their hard earned dollarydoos!
