Blackwind is a hack and slash action game, developed by Drakkar Dev and published by Blowfish studios.
Blackwind is a platformer with a top-down camera view with hack/slash and shooting mechanics inbuilt to the game. In Blackwind, players get to control the protagonist who is wearing a very unique combat/mech suit that provides different abilities, which include melee as well as ranged attacks. The story starts off with the protagonist traveling with his is shot down, while they are transporting an AI mech suit that protagonist James himself is wearing. We are then tasked with saving the father while the AI supports the player in utilizing the technology.
The gameplay controls are very simple, which includes some amount of platforming and puzzle solving in the linear world where there are two different settings – one is inside the facilities and the other is outside space. There is a bunch of jumping around when doing platforming, and here is where problems stems: where the movements sometimes feel clunky and also jumping on platforms is a hit or miss because of some irregularly placed colliders that can frustrate players.
The environment includes a lot of puzzle solving, which is not a challenging act and there is a lot of moving around while we get lost in the map while underground or inside the facilities. Also, on top of trying to figure out the next location for our objective, there is a horde of enemies being thrown at the player.
There are a bunch of upgrades available for the players, which even unlock a bunch of skills that are really cool, including ranged and melee attacks, but feels useless and at one point, the game’s difficulty differs a lot.
Overall, Blackwind is a great addition on Switch, but due to some technical gameplay and design issues, it feels as though the game is being held back.
