Ocean’s Heart for Nintendo Switch, developed by Nordcurrent Labs, is an exciting RPG and adventure game that is fun for all ages and for gamers who enjoy all sorts of games. This fun 2D RPG follows Tilia on her adventure throughout the engaging world of Ocean’s Heart, defeating many monsters, exploring towns and dungeons, while forming relationships within the intertwined world.
Gameplay:
Upon first launching Ocean’s Heart on my Switch, I was immediately engrossed in its world. Playing as Tillia, you are introduced to the simple, but fun combat system where you can hack and slash through enemies while you traverse through caves and dungeons. Additionally, there are many different people in various towns, houses, and ports that you can talk to, which adds to the engagement that I had in Ocean’s Heart.
The combat system consists of Tillia using various weapons, such as her trusty sword, to dodge, deflect, and also slash enemies and projectiles coming your way. Additionally, she is able to use many different sorts of items to enhance her battle skills and boost her survivability against tough bosses and monsters. The combat system can be challenging for gamers who are not used to the retro, 2D style of fighting, as it can be quite annoying when close to death and without game-defining gimmicks, but as you adapt, it is quite enjoyable and fun to challenge and defeat the various types of monsters and bosses of Ocean’s Heart.
Ocean’s Heart combines the open world aspect of exploration within a specific area or town with the linear quest style of traditional RPG’s. I thought that Ocean’s Heart struck a good balance between exploration and story progression, as I was able to find many hidden items while getting to know more of the characters in-game.
I greatly enjoyed the motif of the sea and ocean that was properly represented as symbolized by its name. Many of the areas were island or sea related and I think that both the OST and the art style reflects what Ocean’s Heart is trying to represent, a more light-hearted sea exploring adventure style RPG. The monster and pirate enemies can also be more light-hearted at times.
Reactions/Score:
I feel that Ocean’s Heart is a homage to the 2D Legend of Zelda games that many gamers have played in the past. The combat system, area levels, and puzzles in dungeons are definitely inspired by one of the most popular video game franchises earlier. I greatly liked Ocean’s Heart’s take on the more adventure and exploration focused RPG genre. While it does not have the most customizable options or a complex story, Ocean’s Heart focuses on the fun and engaging exploration aspect as you explore dungeons, cities, and water environments while being challenged by the 2D combat aspect.
I would greatly recommend Ocean’s Heart to gamers who like the Legend the Zelda and Link franchise as well as people who like light-hearted exploration and do not want to be bogged down by dialogue and story.
I rate Ocean’s Heart a 9/10.

I started gaming on the PS2 playing 2K and various fighting games, then played a lot of Nintendo Wii games. Currently, I like playing JRPGs as well as platformers and MOBAs. In a video game, I enjoy exploring the intricacies of fighting systems as well as viewing various character developments throughout the story of the game.
