GRID Legends is a mix of arcade and simulation racing game developed by Codemaster and published by EA to be released on February 25, 2022. (Check Out My Previous Steam Impressions!
GRID Legends is going to cater to a wide variety of players as it includes a mix of campaign and online multiplayer gameplay. And players can have fun playing a lot of different styles of races. We previously played the Grid 2019 and were pretty impressed with the competitive AI that Codemasters brought back in GRID Legends.
Campaign in GRID Legends feels like a documentary that follows the story of Seneca Racing team that is always looking for the next big thing but has failed to capture any good drivers. The cutscenes between the races are all live action but shot as a documentary. But the mix of different races is the great thing that makes the game alive. And the competitive AI, Nemesis system, that kicks in brings the player’s time investment worth it as it makes the competition more active.
Most of the AI becomes your rival if you bump into them, and the race gets more competitive. Sometimes the rivalry can span across the next race as well, if the rival falls under the same series.
The overall feel of the gameplay with the car controls is a mix of simulation and arcade so a lot of different kinds of players will be able to enjoy GRID Legends. Also there are points systems that you can accumulate for staying on the racing line and other different driving scenarios. And these points help players level up. There is a career mode available as well where players are provided with unlocking cars and upgrading them. But certain events need specific levels to be reached so there is a bit of grinding there.
For more professional or simulation fan base can still enjoy the multiplayer, which brings in the actual competition from across the world. Also multiplayer allows players to mix and match different cars and track type, providing some fun online experience.
The graphics for GRID Legends have come a great way though definitely not in the next generation criteria they still keeps the tracks and environment vibrant and alive. And also, Codemasters have done a great job at bringing in a bunch of different types of tracks with different environments and even types of events, like drifting and truck events.
Overall, GRID Legends definitely brings in a lot to distinguish itself among the other games out there. Though not completely on the level of next gen it does bring some needed mix of arcade and simulation with a variety of ways to play the game. I would give GRID Legends 8 out of 10.
