Just in time for the Halloween Season, Black Tabby Games’ Slay the Princess will be appearing in October’s Next Fest. Players are invited to get a sneak peek of this so-called Princess and try to figure out why she’s locked up in the basement of a cabin in the middle of the woods. The demo features seven endings and is fully voice-acted and narrated by horror podcast mainstays Jonathan Sims (The Magnus Archives) and Nichole Goodnight (twitch.tv/nicholegoodnight).
Slay the Princess is a cheeky horror tragicomedy that’s best described as a cross between The Stanley Parable and Call of Cthulhu. This choice-heavy game is slated for a full release in the Summer of 2023. This means fans will have plenty of time to play through the demo to get an idea of who the Princess is and whether or not they trust that she’s a threat to the entire world. Over the course of the full game, The Princess can take over a dozen forms depending on the players’ choices. This means who the player listens to, how they react to new information, and what they believe can all change how the story develops and, ultimately, how it ends.
Timeloops play a key role in Slay the Princess, as death is far from the end of the player’s journey. The main character will die a lot, but with each death comes new information, new voices in the player’s head, and a deeper relationship with the Princess. Whether this relationship is friendly or antagonistic, it all comes down to player choice. The Princess changes with each new loop, too. She might appear to be an ordinary human at first or take the form of a towering demon or a writhing specter. All of the art in Slay the Princess is hand-illustrated by Ignatz award-winning horror graphic novelist Abby Howard, who’s received critical acclaim for her visceral and unique monster designs.
