Monster Energy Supercross The Official Videogame 6 Review for PlayStation 5

The “Monster Energy Supercross” franchise is back with its latest installment, “Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Videogame 6.” Feel free to check out my review of last year’s game “Monster Energy Supercross: The Official Videogame 5” HERE. Again, with any yearly sports or racing game release, there’s always the question of how much improvement and innovation one can expect. Unfortunately, there isn’t much difference between this game and its predecessor, apart from a few minor changes. However, this doesn’t mean that the game isn’t worth checking out for fans of the franchise, because it at the very least continues to improve upon the previous titles, even if only slightly.

Milestone Games has a big audience for their motorcycle games, and they continue to cater to them with “Supercross 6”. As stated briefly in last year’s review, the learning curve for newcomers can be tough in these titles, which raises the question of whether the developers want to welcome more gamers or just cater to those who buy their games every year. One notable feature of “Supercross 6” is the new riding assistance and bike setup options that allow players to completely customize their settings. This feature is crucial to reaching the top in Career mode, where players climb the ladder from their first races in the 250SX Class and eventually fight for the 450SX Class championship title. The game also features Supercross Park, a massive free-roaming environment with five different areas that offer huge jumps, original tracks, and much more to explore away from the pressure of competition.

It must also be said, the budget on these still feel rather minimal, we are still being given old-generation graphics for current-gen titles, even still, these graphics aren’t anything to write home about either, you can tell right off the bat how dated it feels. Anyway, on a positive note, another new addition to “Supercross 6” is the new local split-screen mode called Rhythm Attack. This mode consists of quick 1v1 shootout races on a straight section, and riders compete in a single-elimination tournament until the champion is crowned. For online play, full console cross-play has been enabled for the first time, which is cool and all but features I feel like should have been here for a while now and not something that should be pegged as new and flashy for a new release game, allowing players on every console system to matchmake online together is always appreciated though, and it’s smart to not divide your community even further with these barriers. The game also features a new ranking system that tracks online accomplishments.

So yeah, the helmet and track editors are back, and players can choose from a range of design options to express their style and share them. At the end of the day, it’s a racing game, and I’d be lying if I didn’t have a good time riding the new tracks and competing in races, it’s certainly one of those “what you see is what you get” packages here. While “Supercross 6” may not have made many significant changes from its predecessor, we are seeing an upward trajectory of improvements, granted they should have been here multiple games ago, it gives me hope that maybe by the tenth game, we may finally get something that seriously impresses. For now, the hardcore audiences will still enjoy this enough with the new features to make it worth checking out.
