The current iteration of Project Discovery, which was unveiled during EVE Fanfest last year, expands research to include important immune system disorders, such as cancer, representing a major advancement in scope and possible impact. A new edition of the creative in-game minigame is now available to players, allowing them to participate in scientific study while enjoying EVE Online.
Almost 900,000 EVE Online users have significantly accelerated scientific research through the use of Project Discovery’s flow cytometry technology, which was adopted in 2020 to expedite COVID-19 research. The EVE Online community continues to contribute significantly to Project Discovery on a daily basis.
Phase Four improves the quality of player results by introducing new visualizations, building on the initiative’s past success. With the addition of new X/Y axis density curves, players may now analyze intricate blood samples by creating polygons around cell clusters in flow cytometry data. By improving the effectiveness of AI models trained on the data, this procedure will help researchers understand how the immune system interacts with cancer and open the door to new advances in treatment.
Phase Four players are eligible to get special in-game awards as a thank you for their invaluable services. These include of the Biosecurity Responders SKIN, special clothing, and three new SKINR design elements (Insightful Azure Metallic, Citizen Cyan Metallic, and Scientific Panache Satin).
EVE Online Project Discovery Phase Four Key Features:
- Increased emphasis on important immune system illnesses, such as cancer
- Improved minigame featuring updated tutorial and sophisticated analyzing methods
- More difficult scientific tasks for participants
- Exclusive cosmetic benefits
Achievements of Project Discovery Since 2020:
- More than 900,000 gamers of EVE Online are taking part
- Over 500 million games for citizen science have been played
- Two excellent AI models created using data from players
- In recognition of achievements to science and society, one Webby People’s Voice Award
The following quotes from important stakeholders demonstrate the wide-ranging effects of Project Discovery:
Bergur Finnbogason, EVE Online‘s Creative Director stated, “Project Discovery’s fourth phase marks a major milestone for citizen science by contributing to the cure for one of the world’s most deadly diseases. The EVE community has a proven track record of helping scientists advance research for important causes. We are calling gamers from all walks of life to join our capsuleers in the fight against cancer.”
Dr. Ryan Brinkman, Distinguished Scientist at BC Cancer Agency and University of British Columbia said, “The collective effort of EVE Online players has produced a dataset unparalleled in quality and size. In this new era of Artificial Intelligence, this data is pivotal in developing groundbreaking tools for unprecedented scientific discoveries. We eagerly anticipate sharing these contributions with the scientific community.”
Jérôme Waldispühl, Associate Professor at McGill University’s School of Computer Science said, “The EVE Online community’s collective contribution to science over the years is tremendous. Project Discovery is a unique, effective, and reliable resource for major research initiatives. The synergy of this project with the rise of AI techniques is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to push the boundaries of science.”
Attila Szantner, CEO of Massively Multiplayer Online Science stated, “Seeing the continuous activity and high-quality contributions of EVE players, we know that Project Discovery is not only a highly valuable tool for science but can also be repurposed to serve many important areas of research. After four years, we still have 100-200 data analyses per minute submitted by players, demonstrating the power of this collaboration.”
