GOLIATH Review for PC

GOLIATH Review for PC

This is Gaming Cypher’s PC review of Goliath by Whalebox Studio out of Russia and publisher Octopus Tree.

Goliath is an open world game based on constructing “goliaths” to help you survive on an alien planet filled with trolls and talking foxes and numerous other types of creatures. Think Titanfall but RPG style with less guns and more wood and stone goliaths that walk around beating other creatures with their fists. The premise of the story is that you and your co-pilot miraculously crash-land in this land you both somehow survive although what is left of the ship is next to nothing. You have one goal and that is to survive. The radio starts working eventually and you commune with your comrade and he tells you a little about the world you are in.

GOLIATH Review for PC

My favorite part about this game by far is the way you are able to craft different goliaths. The eventual different types of goliaths you can make is endless. You can mix and match different pieces to create totally new and different goliaths to take on totally new and different areas. There are tons of different areas like a desert area, a snowy area, a jungle area, and woodland areas. The complete depth of this game is what surprised me the most because each of these areas is extremely vast and there are at least 8 areas to a region with 5 or 6 total regions, each one being bigger than the one before. The combat system of this game is fairly simple with their being only two options for attack being strong attack and weak attack. I am sure there are other ways of attacking once you get upgrades to your goliaths but those are the two basic ones. I love that in this game your success or failure depends upon your golem. If you are in the wrong golem for the situation you will have little to no chance to progress through the game but even with the right golem it is still a relatively difficult challenge.

The various NPCs you interact with are a whole manner of different creatures and what sets this game apart from other RPGs is the quality of your responses. You can be a total smart-ass, or a scared little man, or even a good-hearted survivor. The conversation aspect reminds me of the engine in Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas. Overall this game is very good it has a very intriguing story that captures you right away and brings you into the mindset of creating to survive. One of my complaints about this game would only to have the engine be faster. It is a little laggy on start up but continues to get better the more you play it. At the same time it could just be my computer but I like to think I have a pretty good PC.

I would rate this game overall an 8 out of 10. It appeals to those us who love to create new and different ways to play a game. The aspect of creating is never something that can be overlooked in my opinion.
