The dead ones are back. Muertos (Zombies) walking again in this another Telltale gem. After Batman, Telltale has returned with their most successful series, The Walking Dead. Walking Dead: The New Frontier is sequel to the previous Walking Dead series. I had played all the previous games and was eagerly waiting for this one.
Episode 1 Ties That Bind Part I:
Telltale, as name says it all, one of the best story tellers in the industry. This review might contain a part of spoiler as well. Starting with episode 1, they have introduced some great new characters and a new protagonist. The story starts off with a flashback showing the time before the infection spread. And then turns back to the present time. The characters added are Javier, a known gambler before the spread, his brother who is shown mostly in the flashbacks, and his brother’s wife and kids, who are travelling with him. The game starts with a great introduction of characters and integrating them into the current world of The Walking Dead, showing their survival.
The first episode itself has been interesting showing some down, but has been mostly up, which has showed some great character and rise of a new group called The New Frontier. In around 15 – 20 mins of the game, our protagonist separates from the rest of the group, and our Javier starts his journey to get back to his family. He meets Clementine, from our previous two season and she has become a sole survivor, and helps Javier. There is good enough amount of action as well as conversation. And we are introduced some great characters. The way they have introduced and integrated Season 2 and this one has been a great work. The story ends with interesting twists. Javier finds out about the town that is safe for living, as it is barricaded. The story also introduces new characters. Clementine by mistake kills one of the guys who provided her fake bullets and unfortunately while scaring the guy the gun fires off, and Javier and Clementine are put in jail for the night. The episode ends with Javier finding his family in some tough situation. And each decision you are making is going create consequences during the season itself.
Episode 2 Ties That Bind Part II:
Episode 2 has been written greatly as well. It shows a lot of twists and action, and unimaginable consequences that happens during the story. There are deaths of a couple of characters, some of which are heartbreaking. There is the introduction of a couple of characters as well in this episode. The flashbacks of Javier and Clementine are used to fill in the gaps in the story. The relationship between Kate (Javi’s sister in law) and Javier is shown and grows depending on the decisions we are making during the flashback. And same thing goes for Clementine – whichever choice we make right after the flashbacks it is reflected on the present, which I thought is really a cool way of showing the story.
The situation with Javier most of the time is dealing with other NPCs and most importantly his nephew who is a teenager and still growing up. During the end of last episode, Kate was in situation of dying, and we are trying to figure a way to save her, which makes us go through a road trip, and introduce a new character, who turns out to be a great help during the zombie action. They finish their road trip to find some shocking revelations. I am trying to write in a way so that it has lowest number of spoilers, avoiding all the important information. I would say the climax was best for episode 2, as it was such a great reveal, and made me eager to wait for Episode 3 now.
The gameplay hasn’t changed still everything is still the same, I like the consistency of Telltale, whatever type of game you play, either Batman, or The Walking Dead, still have the same gameplay.
Since it has been a great time, and Telltale did come up with some great new season, and I would expect the same of remaining and upcoming episodes of this season. For episode 1, I would like to give it 8 stars out of 10, and episode 2, would be 8.5 stars. I do hope you guys enjoy the game as well the review. Providing couple of videos from the game as well below. I did think episode 2 is for now my favorite episode. The game is available for PC through steam, on Playstation 4 through Playstation store and Xbox One through Microsoft store.
