Iron Wings Review for Xbox One

Iron Wings is a WWII flight simulator by the NAPS Team. In the campaign mode, you assume the role of two pilots as they accomplish mission after mission in WWII.

One of the pilots flies a gunner airplane while the other flies a bomber. I didn’t have too much trouble using the gunner plane against other planes. The game even helps you target and shoot down the planes by providing a lock-on feature. Trying to shoot targets on the ground (which the game has you do despite the fact you are always in a plane) is a bit harder—you need to remember not to crash into the ground while you’re shooting at something on it—but I still found it doable. Trying to use the bomber is a different story.

I found the bomb on the bomber very difficult to aim with. This is made more frustrating by the fact that there are certain areas where you have to use the bomb to progress in the campaign. It reached a point where I was unable to continue because I couldn’t bomb all the targets within the time limit.

All of the campaign missions have a time limit. Annoyingly, the timer isn’t always visible. Sometimes it is there from the start. Other times, it doesn’t show up until you only have a minute left. This caused me a great deal of frustration as I would sometimes be half-way through an objective only to suddenly learn I had been too slow.

The game also includes a free-flight mode and an arcade mode. Free-flight is what you would expect; flying around an environment from the game without any enemies or objectives to worry about.

In arcade mode, you attempt to shoot down as many enemy planes as you can within a time limit. By shooting down certain planes, you can repair your plane, add more time to the timer, or gain more fuel (yes, this mode has a fuel bar). In this mode, you can only use the gunner pilot. You are able to play arcade mode on any map that you have unlocked in the campaign.

Overall, I did not enjoy Iron Wings. While the shooting mechanic and arcade mode were well done, the bombing mechanism (and the fact there was no way around it) really ruined the campaign mode for me. As such, I think a fair rating for this game would be 6.5/10.
