Everyone was so excited for Pokemon Go but now horror fans have something to be even more excited about. The Walking Dead: Our World, by Next Games, is a supposed AR first-person shooter based on the AMC drama, The Walking Dead. Instead of catching pocket monsters, you get to kill zombies next to your favorite character. Characters such as Daryl Dixon and Michonne.
While this game is just as exciting as Pokemon Go, I’m afraid people might lose interest just as quickly. It has all of the same pros as Pokemon Go but it also has all the same cons. It’s fun and addicting but after a while it becomes repetitive. Though in The Walking Dead: Our World there are challenges and social aspects of the game which makes it a little bit more rewarding.
First, the reason I said, “supposed AR” is because that feature isn’t even offered for Android yet, only iPhone with ARKit. I actually didn’t even know that it was an AR game, being an Android user until Norman Reedus (the actor who plays Daryl in The Walking Dead) posted about it on Instagram. I then had to do some research on how to activate that feature and then after further research found out it wasn’t even available for my phone. So I wasn’t able to check out and review the best feature of the game. If you don’t know what AR means, it stands for Augmented Reality. Pokemon Go had this feature as well. It is when the game uses your phone’s camera and integrates content into your surroundings in real time. So it looks like Daryl is right there with you shooting zombies. I think this feature is by far what makes both Pokemon Go and The Walking Dead: Our World game so popular. It is a real shame that it isn’t as easily available to everyone as it was with Pokemon Go.
When it came to gameplay, I at first thought this game was too easy. I made it to level five before dying once but after that, it got slightly more difficult. If you get a hang of the patterns and the strengths of the different zombies it is easy to figure out strategies to take them down without incident. It also helps that you stay on top of upgrades. If you continuously upgrade your heroes and weapons you will be able to take down invasions and rescue survivors easily. Eventually, I think it is after level six, you start to encounter raiders. These are humans that want your stuff and they don’t care who dies in the process. The characters in the show come across many groups of people like this so it only makes sense to add a little extra difficulty by adding them into the game.
If a round doesn’t go well then you have to either change heroes, wait till they are healed, or heal them with a medkit. If you run out of medkits you either have to buy more with coins or gold or wait it out.
There are other things you can use coins and gold for, such as upgrades buildings, or supplies. You earn gold by doing rescue missions, infestations, and taking out raider outposts. Once you have finished around you earn a backpack. In the backpack are cards. Some are new heroes and weapons, XP for your heroes, health, coins, or even gold. You also earn rewards and backpacks when you complete the challenges mentioned above.
The graphics in this game are pretty good and the sound is very immersive, especially so if you have the AR or so I imagine. I think the characters are very realistic to their living counterparts (I mean Norman Reedus approved). The GPS is pretty accurate as well. Something it has that Pokemon Go doesn’t have is street names, but The Walking Dead: Our World has that covered. I find that this makes it much easier to navigate where you are going and how far you have to walk. Another really cool feature is you or another player can set up flares. This acts as a portal for other players who are out of range to be transported to your area. I went to a flare that was on the coast… four hours away from me!
There were a few crashes when I was playing the game and I saw a few other people complaining about it as well but Pokemon Go also experienced this and should be expected with this kind of game.
Overall, I think this is a really cool game for horror and The Walking Dead fans. I think is about time that we have an interactive zombie game. I really hope they expand the AR to Android and figure out a way to prevent it from crashing. I think this is a great game to play if you have time to kill or just want a little zombie killing in your day to day life.
