Adventures of Pip is a 2D platformer action game that is developed and published by Tic Toc Games. It got recently released on Switch on Sept 10 and brings back the era of Mario- like side scrolling platformer games.
Adventures of Pip has a pixel art style that is unique and reminds me of my childhood with 8-bit games. The game is an amazing addition to the Switch as the control, the gameplay, and art style truly resonate with Nintendo games style. In addition, the game has some amazing background music.
Adventures of Pip is about saving the princess similarly to that of Mario and Princess Peach. Here, Pip starts off as a single pixel and then, during the journey, he finds his special powers of converting from a pixel to a boy, later turning into a hero. The world has been invaded by a Skelton Queen who kidnaps the princess. The cool thing about Pip is that each form has specialties of their own and Pip can convert from boy to pixel anytime it’s required. Pixel has the specialty of jump and gliding a little bit, while the boy form can do wall jumps and attacks.
Its easy to switch from boy to pixel but when converting back into boy there are special kinds of enemies that pixel needs to destroy. There is also a third version of Pip that is a 32-bit style Pip, which is stronger, but can’t wall jump. There are levels that will require you to be in a certain form to get through, and would need to constantly switch between in order to finish the puzzles. Each level requires you to save 3 citizens that are spread throughout the levels. Sometimes the citizens are found through the main routes, but sometimes there are secret/hidden routes that players will have to take to get the pixel currency and free some citizens.
Some of the citizens that are saved during the levels are types of NPC’s that allows players to buy items back in town. The in-game currency is easy to find but the prices on the items are crazy high and would require high amount of playthroughs in order to receive that much so it feels kind of hard to get. There are certain chests that provide high amount of currency but it just doesn’t feel that significant.
I would say Adventures of Pip overall is a game that brings back some good memories and the amazing platformer genre. But also half way through the game it kind of fails to grasp the player’s attention with not that many unique features. I would give Adventures of Pip of Pip 8 out of 10.
