The dark cobblestoned allies of a fictional London is a perfect place for a Master Thief to reign. Antihero is a turn-based strategy game that allows you to realize your fantasies of running your own thieves guild. Tom Conkling’s mobile game lets you run your guild and protect your territory on the go. It is also available on Steam.
To be able to run a sufficient guild you must have a range of talents. You, the Master Thief, scout out the city and burgle buildings. You will need to use the loot you gain to hire men for your guild. Estates and banks can be burgled along with normal buildings. The parts of the cities that you haven’t scouted yet are covered by fog. Characters standing in the fog are only silhouettes. If you want to be able to burgle buildings or have Urchins occupy buildings you must scout them out first. You have a select amount of moves before it’s your enemies’ turn. Use them wisely and then have your men do the rest of your bidding.
For the right pay, you have a selection of talents at your fingertips. The Assassin, a lady of “The Sisterhood,” instantly kills an enemy despite how many hearts they have. The Saboteur, is just what he sounds like, is invisible to enemies and sets traps in buildings. The Thug guards tiles and can join gangs to up their strength. The Gang attacks enemies and evicts Urchins from their posts. The Truant Officer abducts enemy Urchins from their posts. Urchins infiltrate businesses to supply you with lanterns and extra money. Urchins can infiltrate Orphanages, Churches, Pubs, and Trading houses.
You can play this game online or just in campaign mode against an AI. The gameplay is taught very smoothly in guided, tutorial like, turns. You’ll need lanterns and money to hire men for your guild and gain victory points. By contract killing, blackmailing, and bribing you’ll gain victory points. The first one to get all the needed victory points wins that round. You won’t be able to advance to the next city ’till you win against the enemy. You can manage your guild by purchasing upgrades. The first couple of turns in each round is a little difficult because you have to regain your upgrades and re-establish your guild to be able to gain victory points.
The art style of this game is super charming. The characters are very cartoonish with oversized heads and the architecture gives a very dark and enticing feel, while the small lights seem warm and inviting. The menus and management of this game are set up really well. The organization is very easy to understand and navigate. The music is very fitting and just enjoyable to listen to. The thing that I love most about this game though is the voice acting! There is a narrator that gives backstory in short cut scenes and the characters have a small selection of sayings. A lot of mobile games don’t have voice acting and the quality this game has just brings it to the next level.
I would rate Antihero 9/10, only because I wish that you continuously were upgrading the same guild rather than having to start over in each city.
