From Illfonic, the developers who gave us memorable multiplayer games such as “Friday The 13th” and “Predator: Hunting Grounds” comes a very unique addition to their list of titles. The game is none other than Arcadegeddon, which was originally released almost a year ago on Steam and Epic Games. Now that it’s made its way to consoles, the kinks have been dealt with and the polish is shiny as can be, because this game plays like a dream on the PlayStation 5. While it may have a tough time fighting off its direct competitors in the mass multiplayer online shooter games like “Fortnite,” Arcadegeddon does enough differently to at least give a shot to see if this cyberworld is your kind of place to play in.
Local Arcade owner Gilly is struggling to keep his business afloat with the evil mega corporation doing everything they can to shut his place down. With his last-ditch effort by creating a new arcade game, the struggle is real, because his enemies have inserted a virus to sabotage this last arcade in your hometown. It’s up to you to go inside the arcade game (very much Tron style) and eliminate all the threats you find to save Gilly’s shop. This third-person shooter is similar to a roguelike, like one of my favorites “Returnal,” where you fight your way from one battle arena to another and must complete a series of challenges before continuing.
Gameplay is king here; the action is fast paced and very kinetic with how slick the gunplay is. Speaking of guns, the selection is plentiful and very creative. There’s a lot of imaginative and bombastic weapons to choose from and experiment with, it took me a while to figure out which were my favorites, exploring and trying which ones suit you best is half the fun. While playing is fun, the enemy types you’re fighting against in PvE all seem to be very basic and all felt very much the same. The bosses also weren’t all that exciting either. The objectives in the arenas often are very similar as well. If it wasn’t for the fun shooting gameplay with enough action to keep you addicted, this would be a much more forgettable experience than it is.
I don’t really have many more gripes to talk about besides the fact that I really wish there was a lot more story progression in Adventure mode. The set up was so fun and cool, that it was a bit of a bummer that the narrative often took a backseat and came off more as just a jumping off point to get you playing in these battle arenas, but that’s about it. The level designs are quite good though and certainly succeeds in making you feel like your character has stepped into a video game world. The entire vibe is great with its neon colors everywhere and cartoony take on the characters (when I first saw the key art to this game, I thought I was going to be playing as Osmosis Jones). To top it off, the presentation also supplies a really solid electronica/synth style score that kept me in gaming mode. Arcadegeddon is a snappy little game, which with cross play now being a thing, hopefully garners a larger audience, because while this specific market in video games is pretty dominated by bigger titles, this littler one is at the very least worth a try.

Gaming since I was given an original Nintendo as a kid. I love great storytelling and unique ingenuity. When both collide in a single game, I'm a happy gamer. Twitter/IG @NickNavarro87
