Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia , a sequel to the Brigandine Series game, is back. The game is developed by Matrix Software and published by Happinet Corporation. It is a turn based tactical RPG.
Its been a long time since the first game, which was released on Playstation back in 1998. The gameplay lets you control one of the six nations available with different weaknesses and strengths and different character paths. Initially, the gameplay looks a little complex but there is a very good tutorial mode provided by the developers that lets you understand most of the concepts. Once the player gets into the game, it seems easy to be able to play.
Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia starts out with a story about an ongoing war among the nations and gives you the option to choose one of the leaders based on different abilities. The game does have an initial narrative just to introduce you to characters, but after the narrative ends, you are taken to the map where you have to conquer each and every enemy base to complete the game.
There are two phases in which the first is an operational phase where the player manages the troops including Rune Knights and monsters. There is a huge amount of customization provided for players. There are multiple options available to choose from for each Knight. Either organize, do quests, move to different locations, train, etc. Mana resources are important for the troops to be able to summon new monsters.
The second phase is the attack phase where each troop is provided with an option to attack an enemy base nearby. Once you get into it, the battle starts. This is a different setting as you can see the current troops on a hex grid map. Each monster and knight have strengths and weaknesses that are affected by the terrain they are on. In addition, there are different troops that players will have to utilize strategically to gain the benefits in the battle. Either you have to defeat all the enemy troops or you can have them withdrawn. Each action gives you experience, and the main strategy is to gain as much experience as possible that allows players through the tougher enemies as they move on. The attack phase seems easier to understand once it begins.
Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia is amazing and provides a lot of replayability because of different nations having different gameplay experiences. But sometimes it gets tedious depending on the situation. Also, players are already provided with the top base that they will need to conquer right from the start, and it feels a bit of tedious task to go through so many bases and it starts getting repetitive after awhile.
The graphics are amazing and play very smoothly on the Switch and the art-style gives it a feel of anime-like characters that is refreshing. Overall, I would give Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia 7.5 stars, for an amazing mechanic that gets a bit tedious overtime.
