Fantasy-based, anime-inspired, tactical role-playing game, BRIGANDINE: THE LEGEND OF RUNERSIA, places you at the center of command in your choice of one of six different nations across the continent of Runersia. Take control of your army by upgrading your units, managing your items and expanding your nation’s reach and power in order to work toward the ultimate goal of unifying the continent under your nation.
BRIGANDINE: THE LEGEND OF RUNERSIA was developed by Matrix Software and published by Happinet and Limited Run Games. It happens to be a sequel to, Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena, which had been released on the original PlayStation back in 1998, but you do not have to play the first game to enjoy this new digital work.
BRIGANDINE is a simple yet intricate turn-based strategy game that has a surprising level of depth, in terms of how detailed planning can be, especially considering how long it takes until you control the entire continent and actually win the game.
As you play the game, time will pass on Runersia in the form of seasons, and each season has an organization phase and an attack phase. The core gameplay of BRIGANDINE: THE LEGEND OF RUNERSIA is split 50/50 between these two phases- preparing and attacking.
The game starts by letting the player side with one of six different nations, each having their own unique politics, cultures, strengths, weaknesses and storyline to follow. Afterwards, the player must strategically build up their armies by summoning more creatures, leveling up knights, completing quests, equipping items, and by invading and securing other bases.
Every creature and knight in this fantastical mana-filled world has different stats, and abilities, and characteristics. BRIGANDINE has a plethora of different statistics, and numbers, and ranks in these fantasy-esque menus that gives us a detailed breakdown of what exactly different playable characters are capable of. It is apparent how much love was put into this game when you consider the amazing quality of each illustration lovingly crafted for each individual creature and character in this game.
I personally really appreciated and enjoyed the tutorial because it had cut down and wonderfully packaged the different aspects of the game into a convenient, easy to ingest way that was convenient too. Most of the menus were optimized well for its game-style and made item and unit managing easy. The game also has different difficulty settings: easy, normal, hard, and custom; this was a great addition to the game that makes it playable and accessible to people less familiar to this game genre.
Actual battles are exciting and fun to see unfold. There are many factors to consider when the player is on the battlefield, thankfully, once you have input your directions, the actual speed of the battle is satisfyingly quick, and still visually entertaining.
Characters are all voiced in Japanese and articulate themselves like anime characters. All of the Japanese voice actors produced entertainingly expressive vocal performances, the voices of characters is one of the highest quality aspects of this game.
BRIGANDINE: THE LEGEND OF RUNERSIA has a seemingly never-ending replayability factor because there are several storylines full of content to explore and experience. The soundtracks are nice but the game really shines with its eye-grabbing illustrations and art style. This game’s graphics were not highly impressive, but I appreciated how you can zoom in and move the camera around to admire the character models a little closer. At a time like this, where millions of people are bored and stuck at home with more time on their hands than they know what to do with, BRIGANDINE can easily fill up that time slot with countless hours of fun.
