Yeah, see YEAH!” City of Gangsters is an upcoming strategy/management title by developer SomaSim and publisher Kasedo Games in which you take command of “The Family” in various cities across the landscape of the Prohibition-era U.S. in the 1930s. The best way I can describe it is SimCity with a mafioso element. Rather than building skyscrapers, you will build bootlegging businesses and false fronts as you buy and sell illegal goods and attempt to win the good graces of fellow caporegimes and other crime families with the help of favors and a bit of the ol’ wetwork.
The customization is a very nice touch, as you have a variety of mafia types to choose from, and in my time playing, I went for a random selection and got both the Italian and Polish mafias to pay as in Chicago. It is very cool to see a wide variety of the criminal element on display – everyone gets a chance to be a dirty rat!
I tried playing the game on my laptop, which is nothing special, but realized that the game, which is something special, needed a lot more power under the hood to run well – every city landscape is MASSIVE, and offers more things to do, businesses to front, and other families to interact with, than I can name. On my gaming PC, which is a few years old at this point, it ran much more smoothly – its simple, yet effective, looks are deceiving for a game that needs a good amount of memory to run well.
My one request at the moment is for a tutorial. I am not a good Sim strategy gamer by any means, and though I enjoyed working my way around town, this is definitely a type of game where I humbly admit that I need a bit of hand holding at first to help guide me along. It would definitely make the experience smoother for a general audience. NOTE: At the time that I played this preview, there was no tutorial, but I understand that the game should now have one installed or one will be installed shortly 🙂
I want to make another important request to the developer – please upload or sell the music! I greatly enjoyed the smooth jazz present throughout the game and honestly left it on a while after playing just to enjoy it while I did other things around the house. Again, it is simple, classic, and very effective, not only to set the tone for the game, but in my opinion, any other point in your daily routines!
If you are looking for a city sim with a lot of character and enjoy the history or media of mobster and bootlegging that is 1930s America, do your capo a favor (you probably owe him one anyway), and keep City of Gangsters on your hit list. It may just be an offer that you can’t refuse!

Your local neighborhood nutjob, gamer, and teacher! I'm an avid fan of many genres such as platformers, shooters, horror, etc. I am also an avid tabletop gamer - hugely into the worlds of Warhammer and all of their spinoffs. I'm a big believer in being objective - even if something is not my cup of tea, I want to talk about it on the objective level - is it well made, crafted with love, and with care for the fans? If so, that's a good game in my book for someone and well worth their hard earned dollarydoos!
