As crazy as it is to say, Halloween 2020 already came and went. The end of October is the spookiest time of the year, and it felt appropriate for Nintendo to release the horror/stealth video game, Clea, for the holiday. Released the previous year on Steam, fans of the horror title can now play on their consoles while they wait for the sequel to come out March 2021.
Clea was developed by InvertMouse and is a suspense-filled game for all players. Priced at $14.99 for the Nintendo Switch, this title is a great bargain for the retail listing. Suit up and ready to watch your back on this eerie adventure!
Plot
Clea and her brother, Ed, live in the larger manor called Whitlock mansion. The children’s parents recently have been experimenting with humanoid monsters known as “Chaos Servants”. On the night of her birthday celebration, these mystical figures are on the loose, meaning Clea and her brother must find a way out. Dive deeper and find Easter eggs to discover Clea’s family history and other hidden plot points!
Gameplay
Clea is a 2D side scroller that depends on crucial timing and execution. The whole game takes place at the Whitlock mansion and players must interact with their surroundings to find new vantage points. Each segment of the mansion is similar to a new level, meaning players cannot free travel around the map. Speed runs can still occur for the title and each level provides their own challenges.
Stealth is the only tactic that can beat the game. Although some instances have proven that running away from enemies works, most of the time, players have to go unseen the whole time to pass the level.
My Personal Experiences
In the past, I have not been a major fan of horror themed games. I do not appreciate jump scares and most games of this genre depend on it heavily. Luckily, Clea sticks to their claim that jump scares do not occur. The real thrill and suspense are formed by well-designed graphics and eerie audio.
My playthrough of this game was quite short. I believe most users can beat this game in a days’ time, but that does not discredit how good this game actually is. I found the runtime to be quite appropriate and if it was longer, I may have lost interest in the title. Enemies can roam freely around the map, meaning there are a lot of uncounted variables that can make each run–through feel unique and special.
The Final Verdict
For the time of the year and the price listed, I would say this game is worth the buy. The replay ability is quite high, and the game is very engaging. I truly felt there was never a dull moment while playing. Being on the edge of my seat throughout, I can confidently say the title is indeed scary. Get bundled up and play Clea in the dark and you will thank me later.
Final score: 7/10

Nintendo Switch Review
Video games have played an essential role in my life since my parents purchased me my very own GameCube. Countless years and games later, I still have appreciation and love for the gaming community and culture. My passion for a variety of games has kept me close to many friends and roommates over the years. Starting in the fall, I will be embarking on my final year at Michigan State University. I am very excited to see what this year full of gaming will pertain.
