I had the pleasure of experiencing the Doctor Who: The Edge of Time demo at the San Diego ComicCon this year. Although the demo was brief, it was more than enough time to fill me with excitement and much anticipation for its September 2019 release. The premise of the game is that The Doctor has been hurled through time to the end of the universe because a virus threatens to rip apart reality has been unleashed – and you and The Doctor are the universe’s only hope.
Gameplay:
In the demo, we get a quick glimpse into the Doctor Who universe.
You are in a junkyard armed with a sonic screwdriver with The Doctor; Well, in a manner of speaking, The Doctor is speaking to you from across the universe and helping you on your mission. The version of The Doctor that is helping is the amazing 13th Doctor Jodie Whittaker.
The level of immersion that the game provides is intoxicating. The sound design and visuals are fantastic.
It’s like you are truly in this universe. The only thing that’s missing is feeling the wind in your face. During the demo, The Doctor walks you through some tasks to help you call the TARDIS. And you will want to get into the TARDIS because old foes are not far away.
For any Doctor Who fan, the moment you turn on the sonic screwdriver it’s like you’re a kid in a candy store. It’s one thing to see the TARDIS on TV, but when you are in the VR world, you can enter it. It’s an entirely different experience to have the opportunity to walk into something that looks small but actually see and feel the bigger-on-the-inside moment.
This is a must have for all. Doctor Who fans you are in for a treat. For everyone else, well more like for all the future Who fans, pre-order your copy today. Doctor Who: The Edge of Time come out in September 2019 on PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Vive Cosmos.
