Burnout is one of the racing games in the history of gaming that has stuck with most players and I think EA and Criterion back in the PS2 days had done the best job making it. My whole time during my childhood was playing Burnout 2 and 3. The way the slo-mo cameras are implemented and the crashing of the cars, and the sense of achieving some of the greatest takedowns in different ways was challenging.
During PAX East we demoed Dangerous Driving; you can technically call the game a successor to Burnout, as it is created by the co-creators of the game after the split with Criterion. Three Fields Entertainment is a small studio of about seven people, working and recreating the magic of Burnout. Three Fields has given out some of the few games in past years that had some Burnout magic and recreating some of the greatest modes.
Finally, after getting the review code for Dangerous Driving, I was so excited to play some of the magic that was being recreated. Dangerous Driving does not need any tutorials because the game itself is in your blood rush. Just pick up and start racing your way through the laps. Dangerous Driving has a bunch of different events from the actual Burnout game except the Crash Mode. The game starts with Tour Mode where each different type of car has different events and you can play through a variety of cars such as Sedan, SUV, Sports Cars, etc.
The game starts off with the Sedan and once you unlock and finish its events, you can unlock the SUV and so on. As I mentioned, the game modes do not need any explanation, including the Takedown, Heatwave, Eliminator, Preview Race, and Time Trial modes. There are COP events as well where you drive as a cop car to stop the racers. Overall, Dangerous Driving gives you an incredible adrenaline rush as well as a sense of achievement of takedowns and slo motion cameras. It was just like living through my childhood again! Normal GP and Takedown mode have some great challenges where you can still see the debris from the takedown in each lap and that stays on the Lap through the race. This increases the difficulty at the same time.
But even with all the great things, Dangerous Driving doesn’t quite live up to the actual Burnout name, as there are a lot of glitches. While racing, the traffic collision does not seem balanced as sometimes the cars just explode simply by touching the other traffic cars even with very little amount of force. In addition, during the takedown, the camera would show a car behind you and then it would be a few seconds ahead of you right after the camera goes back to normal mode. Sometimes the cars will get stuck in a few places without even colliding and many more similar glitches while racing. It seems nine months of development might not be enough time for the game for all the quality checks and optimizations.
Overall, keeping those quality check issues out of the scope, Dangerous Driving is a perfect recreation of one of the best racing games, but at the same time it still is not quite up to the same level of the actual Burnout game. I would rate the game 7 out of 10 stars.
