Do wolfmen, battle nuns, bounty hunters, chipmunks, gourmet chefs, and zombies all wrapped into one package with some gothic horror wrapping paper and bows interest you at all? If the answer is yes (and it should be!), Shiro Game’s Darksburg should be an immediate point of interest for you.
A 4-player top-down action game starring this troupe of comedic horror stars puts you in their shoes (or paws) as you bash, shoot, claw, and slash your way through the zombie overrun streets of Darksburg. While I could not find any partners for co-op play at the moment, the AI did a fine enough job assisting me through the gorgeously styled levels. I chose to go with Vogel, the wolfman, who has escaped custody and become buddy-buddy with his fellow survivors. A tank archetype, Vogel can use his shield to block incoming attacks to protect his allies or go all hound dog on the undead and rush into a berserker way to tear through anything in his path. It was a howling good time!
At this point I should mention the special enemies, including the enormous Baron von Darksburg. These fiends seek to get in your way at any opportunity. They also serve as the playable enemies when you enter PvP mode. Think Left 4 Dead special infected and you will not be too far off. They not only look awesome, but they have a number of cool special abilities, ranging from a variety of black magic spells to simply having the biggest fishhooks/meat hooks this side of the marketplace.
The sound design is a lot of fun as well. The voice cast has done an excellent job in bringing the world to life. The voice cast does a hilarious job as well, from the comments made on the insane situations to the announcer going back and forth with the characters themselves, it has a great comedic atmosphere to counteract the gothic horror. The latter of which, by the way, is backed up by some nice melancholic and mood-setting instrumentals.
Overall, I really want to give Darksburg a shot with my friends when it releases from Early Access. I am not the world’s biggest fan of top-down action games, but the setting, fun cast, and gameplay have rung all of my bells so far, and I think players will find it engaging as well. If you are in the mood for a cartoonish action-horror game, you will not find any better options than Darksburg!

Your local neighborhood nutjob, gamer, and teacher! I'm an avid fan of many genres such as platformers, shooters, horror, etc. I am also an avid tabletop gamer - hugely into the worlds of Warhammer and all of their spinoffs. I'm a big believer in being objective - even if something is not my cup of tea, I want to talk about it on the objective level - is it well made, crafted with love, and with care for the fans? If so, that's a good game in my book for someone and well worth their hard earned dollarydoos!
