Death’s Gambit: Afterlife is a 2D side scrolling, soul-like platformer game; Afterlife is actually an update for the 2018 game, which includes a bunch of new content. Death’s Gambit: Afterlife is developed by White Rabbit and published by Serenity Forge.
This was the first time experiencing Death’s Gambit in all its glory with the Afterlife update. Afterlife brings bunch of amazing amount of content that includes:
- A complete revamp of gameplay, improved movement and expanded crafting.
- Alternate ending to the story.
- Over 30 weapons total, with new talent for each weapon.
- 6 new bosses to fight
- And a bunch of additional levels to explore.
The game starts us off with contracting with Death and choosing the type of class players want to play the game as. We are then dropped into the game world with some basic movements. Death’s Gambit: Afterlife expands with addition of skill tree, weapons, and armor upgrades and introduction to secondary weapons usage. There are a bunch of bosses and mini boss-like enemies that the player will encounter. Each boss has a very unique strategy required to be defeated. But overall, the combats are not very hard. Some of the bosses were defeated in a single attempt. Overall, after a boss is defeated, the player can attempt the boss fight but with higher difficulty to each boss.
There are rest points through the levels, which are depicted as Death Statues. Summoning horses is a very interesting mechanism and helps in traversing faster in the game. Also there are plumes that players can use to increase the damage and collect the energy after defeating the enemies and use the rest points statues to level up and change abilities. Last rest point will be the location where the player will be able to revive at. To update the respawn location, players will need to rest at the new Death statue.
Abilities are available through the game, which can be bought from the NPCs or available in the world. The player movements are very refined and lets you jump and dash. There is a block and slide mechanic as well that are very helpful in different situations while encountering enemies.
Each map level is like an interconnected web which players will need to travel and somehow get familiarized and unravel overtime by going through each path. Also, a lot of paths to different areas are available right at the start but most of them are not available as players will have to unlock the areas from the other side of the map. Players also get talent points that can be spent on skill trees. And used to accumulate different types of orbs that players can utilize against enemies for some faster attacks.
Overall, the concept, gameplay, and story feels amazing. One thing I kind of felt it fell short on was the resolution of the game felt low and I had to use windowed mode to get a better feel of the game. Though Death’s Gambit: Afterlife has an interesting art style which is more of pixel graphics, still a little higher resolution might help get a better feel for the PC players.
I have loved playing Death’s Gambit: Afterlife, and I am sure players who love 2D side-scrolling challenging games will definitely love this. I would rate this game 8 stars out of 10.
