Introduction/Information about Despera Drops
The game Despera Drops was released on the Nintendo Switch earlier this month. This game is a narrative adventure game where players will need to unravel different clues and solve the mystery of a murder case they are a suspect of. Personally, narrative-driven storytelling games like this one are always a hit or miss for me. What makes any of these games fun for me is how much interaction I have when playing through the narrative. This game does have players interact with the narrative, but for me, it was not enough. However, I would say this game does have a very appealing story that I can see many players enjoying. After playing Despera Drops, I would say that this game has very interesting characters and an appealing story; however, there isn’t much in terms of interactive gameplay.
Gameplay
The gameplay for Despera Drops does not have much. Since this is a narrative-driven game, the player will mostly be involved with taking in the story. What the player will be interacting in the story is by choosing different responses and actions. As I mentioned before, it’s not much players will actually be doing. However, the story is something for players to enjoy. In this story, players will take control of a Japanese student who is studying abroad at a university in Italy named Mika Amamine. The story starts after Mika gets involved in a murder incident, gets framed as the culprit, and is arrested for the crime. She is put into a van and cuffed together with other convicts. Each character has their own charges, as well as their own unique characteristics. One character, quiet and private, was charged with assault. Another, a con man charged with fraud. There is another character, also a suspect, charged with murder. An interesting character in Japanese culture charged with being responsible for bombings. Finally, the last two are younger, energetic characters. One is a simple pickpocket, while the other is charged with hacking. Within the story, the player will get to interact with these characters, talking to them with different prompts. Players must unravel the mysteries behind the murder incident if they want to reclaim their normal life.
Final thoughts
Overall, I believe that Despera Drops has very interesting characters and an appealing story, but there is not much interactive gameplay to be had. Once again, narrative adventure games are a hit and miss for me. The less interaction there is, the less I tend to enjoy them. However, I do believe the story is something for players to enjoy. Especially for those who enjoy narrative driven games. If you are a player who enjoys a good story with interesting and diverse characters, then I would still recommend grabbing this game. Players who wish to get this game can buy it on Nintendo Switch on the Nintendo eShop. There is also an exclusive version of the game available on the Aksys store that comes with more.
