PIXONIC has churned out a surprisingly sophisticated experience for a mobile game. DINO SQUAD for iOS was still in the beta testing phase when I previewed it – Here are my initial impressions:
One of the most widespread lamentations for online mobile games (or any online game, for that matter) is exhausting lag time and glitches galore. In these strange quarantine times, I think I speak for most when I say that a smooth internet connection has become quite the luxury. But I am thrilled to say that I didn’t experience a single buffer or frozen screen for the duration of my time playing this, so well done!
I get too excited when trying out new games, so I made the mistake of jumping right into gameplay devoid of any knowledge of the controls—naturally this did not go well and I ended up trying to shoot my comrades, only to be promptly murdered by the opposition. Guess I got what I deserved there. But the smart thing to do is to go to hints on the left hand side of your screen: everything you need to know about movement and combat is right there, easily laid out for you. As far as user-friendliness goes, this gets a 10 out of 10.
Customizations come in time and serve as incentive to keep playing and rack up points to acquire the dinosaurs and weapons that best fit your gameplay style. I could use with a few more choices right off the bat, but this is mostly because I like to experiment with my successes based off my gear and character and not so much inherent skill.
Graphically, DINO SQUAD is fantastic. The environmental details and seamless meshes have the sophistication of a PC game. Colors are both vibrant and earthy, making for a fantastic combination of realism and pop.
Final thoughts: Absolutely play this with the music on, it will get you amped up for an epic battle. Accuracy with the weapons leaves a little something to be desired, but I’m sure that will get ironed out. For such a small screen, the controls clutter the screen more than is my preference, making it somewhat distracting and obstructing the view of my enemies.
Just a disclaimer: DINO SQUAD is solely player vs player, so if solo play is what you seek, seek elsewhere.
Who doesn’t love high-powered firearms on prehistoric creatures? A conglomeration of modern and ancient—what fun! This game is definitely worth the download!
