DODO PEAK Review for Nintendo Switch

DODO PEAK Review for Nintendo Switch

Dodo Peak is a puzzle platforming game created by developer Moving Pieces Interactive and publisher Screenwave Media. The goal of the game is for the player to collect all the dodo eggs throughout each level.

In Dodo Peak, there are stages that increase in difficulty as the player progresses through the game. Additionally, there are worlds within the game, similar to how there are various worlds in the Mario series. There are six total worlds, which can be unlocked when the player has beaten all of the levels within a given world.

At the start of each stage, the time it takes for the player to complete each level is recorded. It is displayed in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. In addition, the player is given three goals before the onset of each stage. These vary depending on the level and can range from collecting all coins to completing the phase in a set amount of time.

Coins and stars are awarded at the end of each stage. Up to three stars can be earned, depending on how well the player performs each level. Coins can be used to purchase new dodo birds. Certain birds are only for aesthetic appeal, while others serve a purpose, such as being able to move faster within the game.

There are numerous obstacles and enemies within each platform. These include rocks, snakes, piranhas, spikes, and so on. If the player or one of the dodo babies are hit by an obstacle or an enemy, then the player loses the level and is given another opportunity to complete the stage. The number and type of obstacles or enemies is different for each level.

Within the game there are also various items that can aid the player. One of these includes the watermelon, which increases the speed of the player’s movements for a short time. As the player advances in levels, there may be more of these watermelons.

The animation style of Dodo Peak seems similar to something one would find in earlier Mario Brothers platform games. The color palette for the game is solid and looks nice.

Some positive aspects of Dodo Peak include the originality of the game premise and the animation style. As stated in the previous paragraph, everything from the dodo birds to the snakes is colorful and realistic looking. Creating a game where the player must collect all dodo eggs is unique.

Some negative aspects include the inconsistent level difficulty and the animation. What I mean by the animation is that during my playthrough, when I was traveling across the platform, sometimes a falling rock would go through my dodo or one of the dodo chicks. Also, during my play time, I noticed that the tenth stage of the first world is harder to complete than the tenth level of the second world. To me, this does not make sense as I would expect a game to progressively increase in difficulty in concert with the number of levels a player has completed.

Based off all the aspects of the game I have outlined above and the positive and negative highlights, overall, I would give Dodo Peak a six out of ten.

Some of my favorite games include the Bioshock, Fallout, Mass Effect, Wolfenstein, and latest Tomb Raider series.
