Dungeon of the Endless, developed by Playdigious for the Nintendo Switch and partnered with SEGA and Amplitude Studios, is an award-winning roguelike dungeon crawler combined with a castle or base defense elements. Your band of heroes are actually a group of condemned criminals aboard a prison ship called “Success.” All you know about this new planet is that it’s “survivable” but when you land, you end up crashing through some sort of facility and stuck in an endless dungeon (i.e., the name of the game). Your stranded group of criminals need to protect the ship while exploring the endless dungeon around them while fighting aliens and fixing the facility. Dungeon of the Endless is available for both digital download and physical copies for the Nintendo Switch as well as Microsoft Windows, macOS, iOS, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
I think Dungeon of the Endless is a pretty cool combination of game types. Dungeon crawler and castle defenders are both really fun and classic gameplay styles and combining them has definitely added a refreshing spin. The gameplay for Dungeon of the Endless is very interesting. You guide your characters through the dungeon by picking which rooms they advance into but they auto fight and repair, no need for any actions to take place. This is a little disappointing and I wish there was more gameplay when it comes to the dungeon crawler aspects of the game.
While being a cool blend of the two gameplay types, Dungeon of the Endless also has elements of survival gameplay. You gather resources to power the facility and build defenses against the monsters/aliens inhabiting this planet. I do suggest playing the version for the Switch in console mode rather than handheld. I feel it is very hard to see everything that is going on in handheld mode since you’re observing everything in from an aerial view, making the rooms and characters seem very tiny.
I like the design of Dungeon of the Endless a lot. The 8 / 16-bit pixel games have been making a come back over the years and Dungeon of the Endless is no exception. The character designs are great and I really like the variety there is in the different rooms of the dungeon. My favorite thing about this game is that one of the criminals that you can play as is a pug! Nothing beats a criminal space pug (just ask the Men in Black). The sound design in this game is also spot on. I love the SciFi/fantasy vibes the whole game gives off. I think it was a great blend of the genre and a cool spin on both dungeon crawlers and castle defense games.
Overall, Dungeon of the Endless is a great game if you want something refreshing that brings dungeon crawlers, castle defense, SciFi, and fantasy together in one awesome 8-bit game. Again, I do suggest playing this game in console mode when playing on the Switch because of how difficult it is to see what is going on, but other than that I think this game is really fun and definitely something new.
