Elteria Adventures, by developer Elteria Team and publisher Heatherglade, is the answer to a question I didn’t know anyone was asking; what if there was a multiplayer game that was Fortnite’s PvE mode with a little splash of MMO mechanics. Instead of Fortnite’s central island – and it’s impossible not to talk about Fortnite when evaluating this game, since everything, from its layout, to its character models, aesthetic, building principles, etc, come from that game – we get a series of floating islands that can be connected with player-built devices and structures. It is Fortnite with a twist, with the twist being that it doubles down on the online cooperative Minecraft experience, making player versus player combat optional.
As with any MMO-esque game, there is a progression system; a means of grinding (and there is always a grind) for the best gear and vanity items. The current system requires players to gather ingredients and reagents from across the game’s different biomes, or environments; a tedious and timely endeavor, which was recently addressed with a chapter-style change to leveling. This made story beats and missions self-contained to certain sectors of the map, which is a nice way to say the developers rearranged things so all of your quests and fetch items are in the same area, differing via chapter. It’s a tidy solution to some of the more tiring issues with MMO’s like WoW or SWTOR, where you’re left running halfway across the map and back again in a frustratingly inefficient series of quests.
When Elteria Adventures leans into its own unique environments and aesthetics, like the pastel colored Tentacle Grove, it stands apart from the worlds of Fortnite and Minecraft – it’s so clearly aping and feels like something worth exploring. But when I come across my third not-nether portal, I feel that the old saying – you know, the one about imitation and flattery – just isn’t holding up here. There are original, interesting things that Elteria Adventures has to offer, they’re just trapped inside Fortnite’s aesthetic. As the game continues to be developed, I think there’s more than a few areas for the developers to grow and change. Flattering comparison’s to the games aesthetic inspirations are possible, if they make them a little more unique.
