Card games can be an expensive hobby to get into, and that fact always deterred me from trying my hand at them, as well as the daunting task of learning how to play a new intricate strategy game. I will be honest and admit that I have had little to no prior experience with collectable card games. Fortunately, FAERIA is a charming, fantasy-based card game that is easy to pick up and is friendly to your wallet.
FAERIA was developed by Abrakam SA and published by Versus Evil and boasts that it is, “the only card game where you can gain all 300 cards in less than 50 hours.” If the prior sentence doesn’t make it obvious that this is no ordinary card game, then allow me further explain some of its more unique features.
Obviously, I am familiar with other virtual card games like Hearthstone and Magic the Gathering, but where FAERIA really stands out from the crowd is in its core gameplay. FAERIA has its own completely unique game board that the developers like to call a living board.
A player must bridge their way to the opposite side of the board to directly attack their opponent. A typical game will start with the living board being transparent. When it is your turn, the player has the option of either placing down two neutral tiles, one elemental tile, or you can choose to acquire either one extra card or one extra mana instead. This element of the core gameplay highlights the stark contrast of FAERIA compared to other card games because it adds numerous layers of strategizing and item managing to a card game that is already intricate.
There are four mana wells spaced out on parallel sides of the living board and it can be very beneficial to keep a creature next to a well so that you can acquire extra mana each round. With the way this game has been designed, there are seemingly infinite numbers of combinations and strategies that players are able to create and play with.
FAERIA is an awesome card game to try out because the game will hold your hand and ease you into knowing how all the different card and living board mechanics can be utilized. The adventure missions allow you to play against a bot so you can get experience playing the game. Puzzles are an excellent addition to the game and serve as guides that teach players how to use certain cards’ abilities as well as improving the player’s skills in general.
To my wonderful surprise, this game is highly generous in terms of rewarding the player with new cards and in-game currency. Regardless of whether the player wins or loses a match, both players are still rewarded with in-game gold and chests that contain new cards. Even more rewards can be obtained from logging in daily and completing daily missions.
The art style and musical direction of this game follows a magical medieval fantasy aesthetic. Each of the intricate illustrations on the cards captivated me and immersed me in the world of FAERIA. The sound design always felt relaxing or exciting, never distracting or annoying.
FAERIA has the potential to be a successful and beloved card game because it stands out so much from the crowd in an exciting novel way. The only drawback of this game that I found was the huge time commitment it takes to learn how to play the game and master your own playing strategies. However, for those people seeking a fun new fantasy game to play, FAERIA is definitely worth checking out.
