Four Kings: Video Poker for PlayStation Review

Every console has a slow drip of casino games released over its lifetime. Many of them go under the radar, eclipsed by the big-name franchise releases. Yet they can be surprisingly good. Some can offer everything the casino floor would apart from the ability to place a bet.

The latest release is Four Kings: Video Poker by Digital Leisure Inc. Previous titles by the developers include the Four Kings Casino & Slots. This could be one of the best casino titles ever made. It offers breadth and scope with interesting features such as character customization. Creating a very hard act to follow, the company have decided to concentrate on the popular game of poker.

Four Kings Gameplay

Your objective is simple and follows the rules set out by the World Series of Poker. You start with a pot of money and must attempt to get the best poker hand possible. Winning is done by getting a pair of cards with the value of a jack or higher. The game provides you with an endless amount of chips, so you can keep on betting and working on your strategy. All this remains interesting by variation added in the form of trophies. As the game goes on and you perform various feats you will gain both common and rare ones. They involve tasks such as playing several games and drawing different hands.

The mechanics are easy to use and for fans of poker, it gives a fair representation. It is a useful tool to improve your game.

Downsides to Video Poker

However, the game suffers from its lack of variation. If you read Masterclass’ article, there are 12 different variations of the game. Yet here there is only one mode available. Giving you unlimited chips also facilitates a lack of challenge. There is no consequence when you lose. Even many of the trophies get awarded for things you want to avoid, like losing hands and losing your chips. The rare ones are easy to achieve, with 37% of players managing to grab the most elusive trophies.

Finally, there is always something lacking from these games when you cannot wager a bet. The technology involved in iGaming now means browser and mobile games are now as good as ones on console and PC.

This is clear by the sheer variation of games available on iGaming sites. For example, there are several live poker games available but also, if you want to try other popular table games or even play slots online, major sites like Mr Green are delivering a wide range of gaming options. Top developers such as Microgaming and NetEnt are working on their titles. But they have the bonus of being able to use real money to do so too, which is where this console game lets itself down.

The previous title Four Kings Casino & Slots came much closer to recreating this. Yet the fun little touches in that title are missing here. In its defence, the game is also available on a wide range of platforms such as Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam and costs little on them all. Overall, it offers a decent poker experience that needs a little more variation. 5/10
