Generation Zero is post-apocalyptic first-person shooter game with some RPG elements in there, developed and published by Systemic Reaction that is part of Avalanche Studios Group, which is responsible for critically acclaimed Just Cause series.
The world has been taken over by the robotic organisms and the game is setup in late 1980s in a Swedish country. Character creation allows you to create a character based off 1980s styles, whichever the player wants to go with. Generation Zero lets you explore the area with the quests and directions and as you discover the safehouses throughout the map, the game lets the player fast travel between the locations. There are robots looking like dogs and big mech machine that will keep showing up over and over. And it is weird how the robots can spot you all the way on the other end of fields.
Generation Zero does not have any NPCs in the game – the only things you will be interacting with would be either be some audio tapes or radio messages – well, at least till player start doing the DLC missions. Generation Zero unfortunately seems to be an extremely unpolished game and seems to have a lot of bugs, especially with the bicycle that players can use to travel through the terrains of the game. The only proper terrain those bicycles can run on are roads, that is extremely hard to travel on because of robots patrolling most of them.
Anther thing about Generation Zero, especially with maps and levels, is that most of the infrastructure is all the same inside and out and has been reused including the fields, cars, houses and even the enemies. There are barely any variety of enemies available. The map is so big and after a certain point of initial quests, there are streamlined quests as they are spread out all over the places and there is linearity in the missions. After a certain point the game feels really annoying to play because of all the repetition. The enemies do get stronger as you move over to different locations and players can use to Skill points to acquire better skills, but the game feels really grindy and makes player lose interest in the game.
Other than skills, players can also add a lot of customization on Weapons for better damage and utilization. Also players can craft the new clothing that provides a better resistance to certain kinds of damages.
At least the DLCs add a bunch of content, Alpine Unrest and FNIX Rising are the two DLCs are out and add some great addition to the game including one of the most missed piece, i.e., NPCs. NPCs are the heart of the most of the open world games, and when there is nothing to interact with, the game feels a little dead over time. So it was a good thing Systemic Reaction did that as well as having added a bunch of bosses, items, and quests.
Overall, Generation Zero could have been good experience, but because of unpolished and buggy gameplay, and missing of NPCs hurts the game a lot. It does have a multiplayer mode where up to 4 players can play the game together in Co-op mode, and can let players do all kind of things in game and have fun. I would personally rate this game 5 stars.
