GHOSTRUNNER Review for Steam

Ghostrunner, a first person, fast paced platformer is developed by One More Level, Slipgate6, and 3D Realms, and published by 505 games and All in! Games, is one of the best games I have played in this pandemic struck 2020. We already tried and provided our impressions on the game during PAX Online event when we sat down with the developers and discussing how the team of 30+ people developed Ghostrunner in about 2 years, and how the COVID has affected the development.

We have played a lot of amazing 2D platformers, but much less first person platformers. And then Ghostrunner came out, a cyberpunk post-apocalyptic world taken over by a corrupt organization, which resides at the top of humanity’s last shelter called, Dharma Tower. Ghostrunners are futuristic androids that have special abilities. Our Ghostrunner wakes up at the bottom levels of the tower assisted by a voice in the head known as the architect, with a Katana in hand. He than starts off the journey of climbing to tower to face off against the big baddies of Dharma Tower. As we move on through the level,s we figure out the backstory

Gameplay for Ghostrunner is pretty simple as it mostly has jump, dash, grapple, attack, crouch, and special abilities to be used. The tough part is executing all the skills as you have to find the next platform while wall-running and sometime attack while on move and evade mid-air using the dash that slows down the time and lets you move left or right based on the projectile. Honestly, in the initial levels I died around 50-80 times, and I thought it was pretty bad, but as I moved on it just became worse for me. I had hit about 140 deaths in one level. But that is the fun part about this game -there are certain checkpoints where you have to keep on trying different strategies where you have multiple different enemies in a single area and you have to use the environment around you to evade and attack all of them at same time. If I write about it, it will keep going on, Ghostrunner’s concept it simple but when in execution, it takes all of your skills. As you move, on you can use different special abilities.

There are customizations available in Ghostrunner that let you utilize Tetris-like blocks to be set into a board that provides additional abilities or upgrades. For example, deflect is a default skill that allows you to deflect bullets coming to you, but using one of the blocks lets you reflect those bullets at the aimed location. As we unlock special skills, we receive more blocks that we can use the way we want on the blocks.

Ghostrunner is an amazing piece of graphical beauty on PC, with RTX it is just something amazing; the FPS is so smooth and fluid and just never get tired of how fast everything feels when you are playing through it. We also tried the PS4 version and we could feel the difference of playing a game with the FPS looked a bit down graded version on consoles.

I would definitely recommend Ghostrunner to be played on PC, or at least if you want to try on console then wait for the next gen, as we know graphics technology has come a long way and this makes current gen consoles a little bit older technology.

GHOSTRUNNER Review for Steam

Overall, Ghostrunner is an amazing piece of gaming technology, which utilizes the RTX right and also provides replayability to each level for finding hidden artifacts and sword skins. There are small issues with jumping to different platforms and wall-running we have found during the gameplay, but not really big blockers for the game. I would rate Ghostrunner 9 out of 10.
