GIRLS’ FRONTLINE 2: EXILIUM Review for PC

GIRLS' FRONTLINE 2: EXILIUM Preview for Steam

GIRLS’ FRONTLINE 2: EXILIUM by SUNBORN Information Co., Ltd. and published bv Darkwinter Software Limited is a sequel to Girls’ Frontline for mobile devices and changes the base genre of the game entirely.  As for the change in genre it can surmised to focus on competing with other games such as Genshin Impact, ZZZ, and Operation Snowbreak.  Moreover, these games are pushing the mobile game market to compete with renown triple AAA studios for console and pc, as these mobile developers are trying to push the limitations of mobile games even further.  Aside from pushing the franchise into a different genre, the narrative of the game takes place roughly ten years after the events of Girls’ Frontline.  While this can alienate some players, the narrative was written in such a way that all important background information is provided in a clear and concise manner.  However, the game itself is pushing the mobile game market to change with the times and in order to keep up with household names in the same market and externally the developers knew they needed to change the formula to reflect these ever changing times.

With the gameplay of the game utilizing elements from games like X-Com this makes GIRLS’ FRONTLINE 2: EXILIUM a rare oddity in the gacha game genre.  Furthermore, the gacha game mechanics changes certain aspects normally involved with games such as X-Com such as permadeath for characters and so forth.  However, in terms of strictly gameplay most of the combat comes from the turn based, tactical strategy used in game, with a focus on team building.

The various teams sent out into combat need to be balanced between damage (dps), and support (heals/debuffs/buffs) in order to make the game simplified as the player is only able to send out up 3 or 4 characters (Dolls in game) to use in various missions.  As for how the player will obtain these characters is entirely up to the gacha system in game where the player will either need to pay or gain Collapse Pieces that can be then used in the in-game shop recruitment tickets, and level up materials depending upon the player’s needs.  Aside from that, the player will need to use the gacha system in order to get their characters weapons which are also behind the gacha system. While this can seem annoying, but the in-game events correct this issue and make the game feel a lot livelier and provide an opportunity to free to play players.

This overcomes some issues related to gacha games such as the game feeling like its pay to win, however it does not entirely solve the problem, as it can be seen as a stop gap measure.  There is more to the game than just the gameplay, the narrative is what plays a crucial part in capturing the hearts of players.

In terms of the narrative, it is set as a sequel to Girls’ Frontline, and focuses on the continuation of the main character from that game. While this can seem be off putting to new players wanting a more generic main character, they are written in such a way that there is still some choices players can make while having slight undertones as to the real personality of the main character.  Moreover, they are written in such a way that the internal personality has admirable traits that a wide audience can latch onto making them grow with the main character.  By writing the main character in this fashion still allows players to see the main character in two different lights, where they are competent or very down to earth.

GIRLS’ FRONTLINE 2: EXILIUM is a solid game as the gameplay especially the combat, is remarkable as there are various ways to complete missions and with different team compositions.  Moreover, there will be guides on YouTube or on websites to help players understand some of more intriguing gameplay elements.  Aside from that, the story is written quite well and does not ostracize the player for not playing the previous game, it more or less entices the player to try Girls’ Frontline to see what took place.

I would describe myself when interacting with games as a strategist with a pension for stealth and loud explosions.
