Santa Monica Studio has done it again. They became better, as Kratos would say. God of War Ragnarok, the final game in the new Norse world, delivered a power packed performance with amazing gameplay.
God of War Ragnarok has everything within the initial few hours like a tutorial bringing players back and getting them familiar with some old and new mechanics, introducing new characters like Thor and Odin, and bringing back old familiar and beloved faces like Mimir, Freya and Brok and Sindri. Overall the story has everything that players would expect from it, not spoiling anything here.
As for the gameplay, there are new realms to explore and technically all the realms are open to explore by the end game. Also bringing back some old realms from 2018 but with changes made due to the start of Fimbulwinter. Each realm has its own different way they have been affected. But God of War Ragnarok will take you through some breathtaking and amazing places throughout the journey. There is a new way to explore other than by boat, like riding on a sledge with wolves throughout Midgard and Alfheim. There are a lot of side quests to go through and make sure to be prepared for some amazing challenges, like the new Berserker and yes there is a new Valkyrie Queen to be defeated. Muspelheim is back with some new and interesting challenges with the changes in scenery, and this time there is no Ivaldi’s workshop to be explored in Niflheim.
As for combat and equipment, there is a new addition of a weapon, plus some new skills added while bringing back a lot of older skills. The ways to utilize the amulets have changed, rather than equipping them on weapons and armors with the new game they go in their own separate amulet pouch. There are definitely a bunch of armors with unique skills to choose from and many different types of builds to play with. Returning players following the series will definitely have some fun, and the new players trying out God of War Ragnarok might feel overwhelmed a bit, but the game does pace the introduction to weapons slowly, so they get used to one weapon first and then get onto the next ones.
Just like the previous game, the soundtracks are amazing and bring that Norse feeling depending on which realm you are in. I have enjoyed every moment in the game and though combat isn’t much different, due to the availability of different activities, the combat mechanics are still perfect and would let players down.
Overall, God of War Ragnarok is an amazing ending to the Norse saga of the series, and due to some performances from the actor behind the character it feels like an experience on the next level. I will rate God of War Ragnarok a solid 9 stars out of 10.
