Developer Codemasters brings out another game in the TOCA series. Grid 2019 is a great addition to the series with some new and cool features.
There have been quite a few racing games that came out recently in the past few years and some casual players tend to stay away from those. However, the Grid series appears to be more of a professional racing game; even though I do not play much of professional racing, with the new revamped gameplay of Grid 2019, I have had a bunch of fun playing this game, especially for its visually stunning metal clanking graphics or the fluid gameplay.
The graphics of Grid are amazing. The details on the cars and the reflection of light or if you take the track and its surroundings, looks great. The effects of cars hitting each other and the smoke effect because of the that, driving through those amazing scenarios makes the game more exciting.
One thing I need to especially mention is the AI of the game. It is extremely smart and competitive. Some of them will be aggressive towards the player throughout the race, because of cutting or hitting the car. The AI makes Grid extremely fun to play. Also the AI will improvise based on your behavior. It gives player something challenging based on the level, just like a nemesis system.
Grid has another great feature – most of the professional racing games come with rewind, but rarely any of them have events happening differently every time. This was noticed the first time when we played Grid this year at E3 2019, and also during the full game launch. Every time you do rewind, the event happens differently because the AI behavior is also changing. Even though you are far away from other cars and you do a rewind, sometimes you might see AI behaving differently than the last rewind and also sometimes they crash into each other. This is really interesting with Codemasters making a dynamic system overall.
Grid has a good progression system. You can unlock more cars by doing races and tournaments that include customization unlocks as well. Cars in Grid provide some amazing performance from the car that gives you feel of real-life situation, with customization to the engine. Along with driving on the different type of races and tracks/terrain, the racing does not feel repetitive as you can do different style of races in Grid.
Grid is not a completely professional racing game but also it is not a casual racing game like Need for Speed, as it gives you a sense of balance between the two kind of genres. Overall, Grid is a refreshing addition to the series with some new challenge and changes. I hope the series stays and just keeps going up with Grid 2019. I would rate this game 8.5 stars out of 10.
