Headland, published and developed by Northplay and for Nintendo Switch, is a 1-player, action-adventure, role-playing game where you can experience an imaginary world and take back your creativity. Headland’s fantastical world is filled with vibrant colors and interesting creatures, but there is a scary outside force that threatens to steal the imagination and color. Nor, the main character, sets out on an adventure into this imaginary world to help rebuild the Imagination Core and save Headland from becoming colorless and wonderless.

Within Headland, there are different islands you can clear and explore while also meeting habitants of Headland and helping them with their problems. You are able to fight against different monsters and level up your powers. Alongside this, you can collect blueprints to expand your arsenal of weapons and become stronger to defeat the dark force hurting the Imagination Core. While finding blueprints to create your weapons, you can also spend other resources to upgrade them as well.

Headland’s controls are very simple. There is a button to attack, dodge, and block. While the controls are simple on paper, the movement of the character and trying to defeat enemies feels a bit clunky and stiff. Nor’s movement almost seems blocky, where fighting smoothly may cause difficulty. Combat, in general, is not complicated, but if you don’t consider how healthy or how strong you are, there are challenges.

The worldbuilding of Headland is very unique, definitely incorporating the creativeness that one’s imaginary world can have with vibrant colors, silly monsters, and things that just don’t make sense in a normal world. It is endearing, especially since Nor is trying to save the imaginary world from doom.
Headland is really not a complex game in itself, hence the E rating, which makes it great for children and all audiences alike who would like to reexperience imagination and creativity. The controls, gameplay, and plot are straightforward and a younger audience may enjoy this more so than an older one. It can teach younger audiences to never throw away their imagination and creativity, which is a great message.
6/10
