What do you get when you take on the role of Bain from the PayDay series? With the skills of a master hacker and criminal mastermind behind a network, programs, and applications to do so, you get the immersive puzzle game, //HEX, from Solis Studios. Read on if you want to feel like the brains of the operation!

//HEX’s main setup is that you are a relatively new hacker, leaving the straight and narrow of society and engaging in its more underhanded, criminal element. As part of the syndicate, you gain access to //HANNAH, the main AI program used to hack into various banks and other organizations in order to expose weak points in their security and secure your ill-gotten gains. As the trailer states, you are Robin Hood, but just for yourself and no one else!

The interface of the game does an excellent job in making you feel engaged, as most of the time, you will only be seeing a coding interface along with icons in front of you, in which you need to navigate through the various applications and programs in order to bypass security protocols and transfer money from the now hacked bank vaults right into your own wallet.

The gameplay is best described as a challenging puzzle game based around switching between menus. With limited time and little room for error, you will use the coding menu to install and run applications on //HANNAH before completing the challenges and puzzles associated with them in order to unlock all the major nodes surrounding the transfer node containing the money. I will not belay this point; the game is very challenging for new and veteran players alike. I will take my lumps and state that the game made me feel like an absolute scrub. Every time I thought I was close to beating it a challenge, I would screw something up and have to restart. //HEX is a great brain fryer, and that’s a compliment!

I do not have too many concerns, especially as it is early access. One glitch that happened early on was that the initial password to open a level (they give it to you, you press tab to enter it on a new scene) did not work, but I restarted the game and it was just fine. My other thought to the developers is that, while I appreciate a game that does not hold your hand, I think a more in-depth tutorial, with perhaps a “complete this puzzle with me” type of lesson, would help out. I did not think the puzzles were of the “Loom fossil” level of challenge, but the controls, or exactly which button to press, was definitely a blockade at many points. I think that just a few more exact instructions or descriptions may help the player base overall when it comes to playing the game, but again, I appreciate the feeling of being thrown right into a coding conundrum!

//HEX allows you to experience the non-guns blazing side of a bank heist. The criminal element that you briefly see in movies and shows where a master computer technician presses a few buttons and gains access to the complete controls of a bank vault or similar device. It is nice to be able to play a more in-depth version of that role for once, and certainly the game stands on its own for that unique premise. As mentioned, the game is in early access and is due to release on the July 31st, with plenty of plans for content to come. With both a single player and coop experience rearing to go, //HEX can be plenty of fun on your own, or with a friend, if you are looking to test your grit in your Hollywood computer hacking skills. Definitely give //HEX a shot if you are looking for the next fun and immersive puzzle game. Crack those knuckles, grab a cup of coffee, and hit the keyboard as you fill your wallet with someone else’s money!

Your local neighborhood nutjob, gamer, and teacher! I'm an avid fan of many genres such as platformers, shooters, horror, etc. I am also an avid tabletop gamer - hugely into the worlds of Warhammer and all of their spinoffs. I'm a big believer in being objective - even if something is not my cup of tea, I want to talk about it on the objective level - is it well made, crafted with love, and with care for the fans? If so, that's a good game in my book for someone and well worth their hard earned dollarydoos!
