Gaming Cypher had the pleasure of interviewing Anthony Del Col, co-writer (with Connor McCreery) of Assassin’s Creed #1 graphic novel, released by Titan Comics.
- Which Assassin’s Creed game is the first comic most associated with? This is a whole new world we’re delving into, so it’s not a straight adaptation of any of them. However, the American historical setting makes me feel like its kindred spirit is Assassin’s Creed III. They’re only about eighty years apart but the time period is roughly similar in terms of values and customs.
- Have you been working directly with the Ubisoft team? We have! We’ve been working closely with their Montreal brand team overlooking all aspects of the new series. We were flown up to Montreal for two days of story session where they helped us flesh out our story and ensure it adheres to the canon of their universe. The team at Ubisoft are incredible storytellers so it was great to get advice and suggestions from them, and also to propose ideas that sparked a lot of interest in their eyes.
- Which one of the Assassin’s Creed protagonists do you associate yourself with mostly? Is it too obvious to go with Ezio Auditore? Hey, he was cool enough to have in three full games and still the model that all other Assassins are benchmarked against. He reminds of of Prince Hal in Shakespeare’s Hollow Crown series, going from the impetuous prince to a noble king.
- How many comics will be in this series? If people are reading them, we’ll keep writing them! We’d love to explore a great deal of historical periods. (My high school history teachers would nod their heads in approval at this statement…)
- If you could be any video game character ever invented, who would you be? Tom Chambers from NBA Lakers vs. Celtics…? Andrew Ryan from Bioshock…? The original Duck Hunter…? No, in all seriousness I think it would be cool to have been Ezio, mainly because the Renaissance is such a fascinating period in human history.
We would like to take the opportunity to thank Mr. Del Col for taking the time to interview with us.
