JUST DANCE 2021 is the latest yearly entry of the JUST DANCE series where you use motion controllers or a mobile smartphone to follow choreographed dance commands, and are awarded for your accuracy as you attempt to follow the dance as best as you can. As a series newcomer, I was impressed with the level of quality and how fun this game is.
Developed and published by Ubisoft, JUST DANCE 2021 offers a physically fun gaming experience for newcomers and dancing experts alike. With such an effective video game formula, it is only logical to not want to drastically change what has been working since 2009. At the end of the day, the title of the series says all you need to know about the game.
The game has a simplistic, user-friendly menu that introduces the player to a few of its different game modes like quick play, classic just dance mode, and kids mode. Quick play will launch the player right into dancing either solo or cooperatively if you choose to do so, this is a great mode for people who do not mind dancing any song and want to dive right into the action.
The just dance mode is the most intricate area of the game. Here, players are able to: customize their player cards with new avatars or frames that you are awarded with as you play the game, spend in-game currency to acquire random new items for your player card, check out your own player stats, and select a song to dance to from the base game’s catalogue of 41 new and popular songs. The optional sweat mode adds a tracker that guesstimates how many calories you’ve burned as well. Another mode that is included here is a feature called world dance floor, a game mode where you can dance in tournaments with other random players from around the world, and will pair up players according to their similarity in skill level.
Lastly, kids mode is a much simpler version of just dance. This game mode offers a playlist that is aimed for children, the songs here are much easier to dance to, and the choreographed dances can get silly. I personally had a great time being very silly and playing around with the kids mode playlist.
Depending on how well you do each dance, you get in-game currency called Mojo. Players can cash out their mojo in return for unlockable avatars, frames for your avatars and a funny or cool alias for your player card to show off to your JUST DANCE friends online. Although this feature is appreciated, it feels uninspired for a triple A game.
If 41 songs to dance to was not enough, JUST DANCE 2021 has a subscription service called Just Dance Unlimited which you can pay for that will give you access to over 600 different hit songs to choose from. The subscription service is versatile in that you can choose to pay for it from 1-day to 1-year. So you have the choice of how long you want to pay for it. The only catch is you must stay connected to the internet to play those songs.
JUST DANCE 2021 has vivid and surreal graphics which looks glamorous and is hypnotically enchanting. The formula of the games have marginally changed over the last decade, but the family-friendly fun and quality of the content is still there.
Rate: 8/10
