Introduction/Information about Kitsune Tails
The game Kitsune Tails is a game that is scheduled to release on August 1st, 2024, for PC via Steam. The game is already available for Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. This game is a platforming game where players will run, jump, and dash through the different areas of this Japanese mythological inspired world. I greatly enjoy platformers, so I was excited to play this game. After playing Kitsune Tails, I would say that this game is a very nice retro platformer that takes plenty of inspiration from older retro titles.
Gameplay
The gameplay for Kitsune Tails is very simple. As players start the game, they are shown their controls. These controls are moving, running, jumping, and dashing. Those are all the controls of the game. Players can hold the jump button to gain more height. Doing this while jumping on enemies will take players to even greater heights. Running not only helps players get through the level quicker, but get more height with their jumps. However, the faster players are, the harder it becomes to control oneself in the air. Finally, there is dashing. Dashing is primarily used when the player gets an invincible power up. When dashing, the player can break different blocks and reach different areas that are normally unreachable. Once the player gets a hold of these controls, then they are ready to go through the game. In the beginning, the level design for the levels are fairly simple. Players will jump and platform their way to the goal. Certain paths within each level can also help the player reach the goal faster. As players progress through the game, the levels start becoming more creative and unique. One of my favorite levels is exploring a haunted building. In this level, players will have to use lanterns to light their way through. Certain doors will only be shown through the light, as well as certain enemies disappearing in the light to get through. Of course, the level design continues to become more unique as players progress through the game. I would say I’ve greatly enjoyed going through these simple yet unique levels, especially getting to see the levels change as the seasons did. Playing a retro gameplay styled platformer was a very big breath of fresh air and a very nice change of pace from recent games I’ve played.
Final thoughts
Overall, I believe the game Kitsune Tails is a very well made retro platformer. There are very simple yet uniquely crafted levels made that many platform players will love. As I have said before, I greatly enjoy platformers, and I am very glad to have played this game. I haven’t felt this kind of simple gameplay in a platformer in a very long time. If you wish to play a nice, retro styled platformer with unique level design, then I would recommend this game.
Score: 7/10
