Life is Feudal: MMO by developer Bitbox Ltd is a medieval, survival MMORPG. In the large open world, you can traverse over the land, build communities, craft a variety of tools, and create or join guilds while trying to survive in the harsh environment of Abella.
Life is Feudal: MMO begins with a cutscene that gives a short synopsis of the game’s lore. This introduction cutscene is done extremely well, has great narration, and isn’t too long-winded. You’re also given the chance to create and customize your character. Life is Feudal: MMO has decent customization, where you can alter character features such as gender, race, attributes, and skills. It does have a bit of room for improvement, especially with the menu UI and overall limited options.
Once on the island, you are given a short tutorial on the game controls and given a bit of freedom to practice and learn these controls until the next area. After talking to the elder, you’re able to talk to the other NPCs, and you can pick up quests which also serve as an additional tutorial. Once you’re confident, you can voyage to a multiplayer land.
One of the features I really liked in Life is Feudal: MMO is terraforming. I enjoyed being able to mess with the terrain, and structure it in a way that best pleased me. It was also easy to level a terrain with the F3 view which showed each ground level. It was a bit confusing at first with all the menu options, but it was easy to pick up on and learn.
One flaw I found in the game is the large amount of FPS spikes upon loading new areas. This is common in some games, but it created a lot of stutter in a game that heavily favors exploration, especially when starting out. Although Life is Feudal: MMO is still in early access, so it’s understandable – it still needs more work on optimization.
In addition to that, I also encountered extremely long loading times. Once again, this is common in open world games, and even more reasonable in an early access game, but it is an issue that needs to be addressed and hopefully fixed by the time the game is fully released.
There were numerous flaws with the tutorial as well. One of the flaws is the lack of direction. Once again, this is a bit reasonable since it is an open world game, but I think that a tutorial needs a bit more structure, especially in a game as complex as this one.
Another flaw with the tutorial is that it makes it extremely easy to skip through it accidentally. This is good for returning players, or players who create multiple characters, but if a new player accidentally skips the bulk of the tutorial, it is really hindering to be launched directly into the multiplayer map.
Another issue is that Life is Feudal: MMO has an extremely slow start and is very dependent on where you start. This makes the game more realistic and a challenge, since you shouldn’t just be handed everything. A solution to this could be a better starter kit, especially on first character creations, since you may get spawned into a field devoid of any trees, which are very essential.
In short, Life is Feudal: MMO is a challenging survival game set in medieval times. Noteworthy features in the game are terraforming, building, crafting, and guilds. The greatest flaws are optimization and the slow nature of the game, made even slower if you’re playing solo. If you have a group of friends who enjoy challenging, realistic survival games, then Life is Feudal: MMO is a good fit for you.
