Another EA original released this year, following the amazing success of It Takes Two. This time, while it’s not a co-op experience, it’s a very stylish and unique adventure all on its own. With a style that is very reminiscent of Tim Burton’s stop-motion animated films, Lost In Random is also complete with a very cool villain. Spending time in this world is certainly one to experience.
You play as a young girl named Even who is trying to save your sister Odd from the evil Queen’s world. Traveling to multiple worlds on this quest you run into many unique characters. The character designs are all very top notch, some odd, some oddly terrifying. While the dialogue is all written pretty well, it can run a bit long. Some may not see that as a bad thing though, because if you want to learn more about the rich worlds there will always be something around to learn from.
Another unique twist to Lost In Random is its gameplay. While combating enemies, you and your companion Dicey use a series of cards that are, of course, random. With the roll of the dice-y, you will be given a single card to use. You can hold up to 15 cards in your deck. Replenishing your deck involves shooting crystals off enemies with your trusty slingshot. Accumulating enough will get you a new card, at random. Aside from the card mechanic, the combat itself reminds me a lot of the recent Final Fantasy VII Remake or a Kingdom Hearts game. The biggest downside I’d have to say is while the combat can be fun, the enemies can quickly feel repetitive and time consuming, their quantity of health seems overblown, which can make some of the experience exhausting, tedious, and a little thin.
Alas, with this misstep, luckily the world is still so charming and cool that my drive to keep playing persevered. There are five worlds you travel across and each one is very different from the last. The story continues to get denser and denser, as if a Dungeons & Dragons master is having the time of their life and going all in on this adventure, which I personally love. There’s always a side story somewhere to help flesh out the specific world you are in.
There’s not much to hate about this game, aside from my issues with some of the enemies during combat. The only other issue I can think of is sometimes there’s so much dialogue that not all the character animations fit properly with what they’re saying, almost like a poorly dubbed film. But even with these minor setbacks, Lost In Random offers so much rich content on screen that it does feel like you are playing a Tim Burton film, or even one from Laika Productions, such as Coraline. Zoink Games delivers a very memorable experience, that I can see ranking in one of my top favorites of the year. We shall see! I really hope more people give this gem a shot.

PlayStation 5 Review
Gaming since I was given an original Nintendo as a kid. I love great storytelling and unique ingenuity. When both collide in a single game, I'm a happy gamer. Twitter/IG @NickNavarro87
