Mad Games Tycoon Review for Xbox One

When I was first given Mad Games Tycoon by developer Eggcode and publisher Toplitz Productions to review, I did not have particularly high expectations. The game appeared to be quite dated and I was prepared for another clunky and unsatisfying indie game that tried something new and failed. What I got instead, however, was one of the finest games I have ever had the privilege of playing. Mad Games Tycoon is a necessity for anybody even remotely interested in the financial or developmental side of video game production. Mad Games Tycoon is a game that allows the player to set up their own game development studio in a tiny office attached to a garage. From there, players can hire more employees, buy properties, invest in engines or new technologies, unlock new game genres, and go on their way to producing some of the most popular video games on the market.

Mad Games Tycoon offers an impressive amount of customization options that I greatly appreciated. The player has the ability to design their own office, name each video game, the name of their character, the name of the developer, and how much work goes into the graphics, sound, technology, and gameplay of each unique project that the developer undertakes. Following the completion of the video game, the player can review the game and decide whether or not they would like to release the game to the public or work on it longer. Following the release of any video game, the player can see how many games with similar plots or themes are currently on the market. For several months following the release of a new game, the player can track sales numbers of the game over time, and once sales grow stagnant enough that the game is taken off the shelves, the player sees an extensive financial analysis of the game.

Another aspect of Mad Games Tycoon that I really appreciated was how the challenge of creating a successful game in this simulation reflected how truly challenging it is in real life as well. Of the first three games that I developed with my lone 1-star employee, two of them managed to win “Worst Game of the Year” in a move that baffled me as to how nobody enjoyed a puzzle game in the castle genre with a theme centered around firefighters that was said to be (according to my reviewer in the game) “such a bad game that you will never ever need to pick it up from the shelf.” Despite my game being completely misunderstood, I really loved how the subtle intricacies of the game motivated the player to improve on their work and reach the top of the video game field.

Mad Games Tycoon Review for Xbox One

The audio/visual aspects of Mad Games Tycoon are somewhat lackluster and forgettable, but do not remotely infringe on what makes the game so enjoyable and special. As a person interested in entering the gaming industry one day, I think that Mad Games Tycoon is one of the most realistic and comprehensive games that has tackled the topic of the development side of gaming. Honestly, I feel like this game could very easily be used as an educational resource for people trying to decide whether or not they think that a career in gaming would be a viable option for them. Eggcode has done a superb job with this masterpiece and to anybody reading this, if you see Mad Games Tycoon available and have any interest in gaming, buy it.

Score: 9/10

I've been playing video games since I got a Playstation 2 when I was about 5 or 6 years old. The original Star Wars: Battlefront series and the Spyro series initially ignited my interest in gaming, but it wasn't until I got older that I truly appreciated the subtle details that make video games such a unique form of entertainment. My favorite type of video game would have to be any lengthy and plot-driven open world game, with my favorite games of all time being Batman: Arkham City, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, and Firewatch.
