Developed by Cosmoscope Gmbh, Morphies Law is certainly an interesting game, taking the concept of a third person team-based shooter and altering it with a unique mechanic that changes the match’s dynamic entirely. But is it fun to play, or is it just gonna give you a splitting no-head ache? We’ll see.
The game takes on a very Mexican/Day of the Dead aesthetic. I’ve seen this style before in movies like Coco and Book of Life, and while Morphies Law obviously isn’t as vibrant and colorful as the examples I listed, the game still looks good graphically. The environments are still pleasing to look at, and can look stunning as the time of day changes with different matches. Morphies Law also runs at 60 FPS for buttery smooth performance that makes the visuals overall extremely eye-catching. The soundtrack, by the same token, also has a very Mexican feel, but mixes it with Western overtones in order to make a very “Wild West standoff” themed soundtrack, which fits perfectly with the aesthetic and competitive nature of the game. Not especially memorable, but good to listen to in-game.
As for the game itself, you control a skeleton named Morphie, who wields a very unique type of gun. When you shoot enemies, not only do you drain their health bar, but depending on the enemy type, you can also take their body’s nutrients in order to increase the size of your corresponding body part. For example, if the enemy has long legs, you can steal that attribute to jump higher. However, once that body part is at max, it will not grow anymore, so be cautious.
This mechanic alone changes the nature of the combat system, encouraging you to attack enemies first before pursuing the objective in order to build your power and make the task easier, a dynamic I don’t see very often in shooters.
Morphies Law uses motion controls to turn the camera, although you can turn them off if they’re uncomfortable, which I personally recommend. The right stick moves the camera left and right, the left stick moves, Y centers the camera a la Super Mario 64 DS, and the B button jumps, assuming this is the Nintendo Switch version. You also have a butt rocket allowing you to double jump, but it needs to refuel, which it does automatically when not in use. You can also switch gun modes for different types of blasts, such as a shotgun or your default pistol, and steal mass to heal yourself.
Morphies Law is pretty much entirely multiplayer focused, as you play against either friends in local or online multiplayer, or against AI opponents. When picking a match, you select your game mode, pick a map, choose number of opponents, their level if AI controlled, match time, health, and speed of stealing body parts. The modes are, in order:
- Morph Match: where your Avatar is the total mass of all team members and its health is tied to your team’s, and the team with biggest avatar wins.
- Head Hunt: Avatar loses head, so find and carry it to the cannon to shoot it back on, where your size determines head’s weight, and thus your speed carrying it.
- Mass Heist: Activate shield switches to open path to enemy Avatar and steal its mass and give to your Avatar at the altar.
- Masster: Biggest Morphie activates their Avatar to steal mass from enemy Avatar and win. When Masster dies enemy team gets all his mass.
I actually got together with a friend from my Discord server, ThatGuyImortal, to play some online matches together, and we found the controls were tight and responsive, lag was extremely minimal, matchmaking was quick and painless, and all the game modes were extremely fun and unique. However, I should stress that Morphies Law is entirely multiplayer, unlike other multiplayer-focused games that have some kind of single player content. So if that’s not your thing, this isn’t the game for you. But if you like to play online with friends, you can’t go wrong with this game. It’s a bit simplistic in the mechanics, but they’re fun and engaging, and friends make it much more enjoyable. I had fun, and I wouldn’t mind playing it more in the future.
Oh, and shoutout to Imortal for helping me. Go check him out, he’s really awesome.
7/10

Nintendo Switch Review
My name is Orkhan Justin Hazrati, username JJSlider. I'm generally a Nintendo player when it comes to games, but I have branched out to numerous other franchises from the likes of Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, Wayforward, and many others. Generally I like almost any type of game, barring the FPS and Strategy genre.
