MotionRec Review for Steam
When you first dive into MotionRec, developed by HANDSUM and published by PLAYISM, you might see MotionRec and just think, ‘Oh, another 2D game.’ You need to know, though: this game totally flips the script on the puzzle platformer. You play as Rec, a robot exploring a devastated world, and your main trick isn’t jumping—it’s time-loop magic. You’re getting so much more depth than simple running and jumping in a stylish pixel world; it’s a genius way to make you think ahead and start nailing the future steps.

The main mechanic—the “Rec” part of the title—is the super accurate recording and replay of every single move you make. If you’ve spent tons of hours playing indie titles like I have, you know time tricks can sometimes feel cheap. MotionRec is a huge step up because it makes you perfect in both your planning and your actual moves.
The game feels like a true Puzzle Action-Adventure. Every stage isn’t just a level; it’s a hard sequence of moves you have to program. You record a tough jump, a quick dash, or a clean hit on a level trigger, and then you fire off that playback—often while your current Rec is doing something else right then and there. It forces you to think three steps ahead.
This isn’t about just messing around; it makes you perfect. A weak jump in your recording, or triggering the playback even a tiny bit late, means a massive failure, and you have to restart. You need to map out every path, nail down complex timing cues, and manage your virtual “playback allowance” (how many replays you get in the air).
The fun part is that sometimes there are multiple different routes you can take using the motion recording where you might find hidden collectibles. But also a downside is that sometimes you might feel that platforming through some areas can be too easy as well, where you just reuse your old motion rec.
MotionRec is a must-play for any fan of tight 2D platformers, games like Metroid, or serious puzzle games. It takes that great, classic idea—get better by beating hard stuff and being perfect—and slams it into a fresh, time-bending mechanic. Forget easy exploration; this is a full-blown movement-coding challenge that just happens to be a truly great game.
I would rate MotionRec 8.5 stars out of 10.
